The Data Scientist will support ISP in designing and optimizing business processes and data flows within the Databricks/XDF architecture. This role will involve both front-end user-facing work and back-end data engineering and analytics development in Databricks. The individual will contribute to a variety of use cases across the business, including model inputs and outputs, future project data management, ETL development for model workflows, application development, rate and cost analysis, and integration with enterprise data platforms outside of ISP. In addition, the Data Scientist will support ad hoc analytics and modeling initiatives across the company, partnering with teams in Resource Planning, Electric Distribution, Transmission, Gas, and other business areas to deliver data-driven solutions.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Deliver analytics projects with guidance from senior team members.

  • Learn the business domain while building technical expertise.

  • Effectively communicate findings and recommendations.

  • Developing data products in Databricks.

  • Working with Python, SQL, Git, and cloud-based analytics tooling.

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel Energy's business needs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current student, Graduate School

  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics , Analytics / Business Analytics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems (MIS/CIS), or similar

  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred Coursework: Machine Learning Statistical Modeling Data Structures & Algorithms Database Systems / SQL Python Programming Data Engineering Cloud Computing Optimization Time Series Analysis Operations Research Predictive Analytics

  • Experience with python, pytorch and pyspark
