Job description

Responsibilities

The Surgical Technologist facilitates the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION

High School diploma or GED required; relevant experience in lieu of High School Diploma/GED education will be considered.  Completion of an accredited educational program for Surgical Technologist.

MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE

One year of perioperative services  

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Must be certified by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM), [NCCT is acceptable] or meet the grandfather clause. Grandfather Clause: The bill includes an extensive grandfather clause exempting all individuals employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility before Sept. 1, 2009. The clarification notes that legislation does not state employed on Sept. 1, 2009, but rather "before that date. A surgical technologist who is was employed before Sept 1, 2009, may remain employed as a surgical technologist without meeting the certification requirement.

Certified in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of medical terminology.  Good communication skills. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.  Good hand-eye coordination and basic infection control/aseptic technique. Knowledge of instrumentation equipment used in surgical procedures. Ability to use equipment reference manuals and resources for consultation (perioperative suite in total, positioning equipment, tourniquets, endoscopy equipment, instrumentation, electrocautery equipment, autoclave, liquid sterilizers, washer decontaminators). Should possess the ability to understand and react effectively to unique needs and care for all patient populations.
