Job description

Position Summary:
The Science Internship isa part-time and seasonal position during the fall and spring school semesters that provide training opportunities for New York City students. Successful interns may reapply for subsequent seasons contingent on job performance and funding.
The science intern gains skills and professional development related to botanical research and biodiversity collections and will work with an NYBG mentor on a research, collections, or library project.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Research areas may include but are not limited to plant diversity, museum curation, molecular biology, systematics, taxonomy, morphology, development, and/or bioinformatics. This includes working in teams and participation in enrichment activities on career awareness, presentations and science communication, skill building, and conducting themselves in a professional manner. The intern is expected to make satisfactory progress working on scientific research and to carry out duties as assigned by their supervisor.
Science interns are expected to adhere to all safety practices and procedures while onsite and during any online sessions if needed.
Qualifications:
Current enrollment in high school or undergraduate degree program in NYC.
Interest in plant science.
Passionate for learning new things.
Good interpersonal skills and willing to be a team player.
Responsible, punctual, professional, motivated, and self-motivated.
This position requires safety training for interns performing research in the laboratory.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
This position will require work in an office, laboratory, and/or collections environment, with extended periods sitting or standing at a desk, using a computer, and attending meetings virtually and in person with other people. Interns are required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and may use laboratory equipment with proper training. Interns must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
Baseline Work Schedule:
Part time, with schedule determined in consultation with supervisor, approximately 5 hours per week. While school is in session, minors are limited to a maximum of 3 hours/day during the week.
Pay Rate: $17/hr
