What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Engineering Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, coursework in your specific discipline, and current enrollment in an accredited engineering program. Familiarity with technical tools like CAD software, MATLAB, and project management systems is often expected, and some positions may require proficiency in programming languages or lab equipment. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, teamwork, and effective communication help interns stand out. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt quickly to new tasks, and maximize their learning in a professional environment.

How do part-time engineering interns typically balance project responsibilities with their academic commitments?

Part-time engineering interns often juggle project tasks alongside their coursework, so effective time management is essential. Employers usually provide flexible schedules and clear project timelines to accommodate academic obligations. Interns are encouraged to communicate proactively with their supervisors to ensure deadlines are met and expectations are aligned. Collaborating with teammates and leveraging available resources can also help interns stay on track and gain valuable hands-on experience without compromising their studies.

What is a part time engineering internship?

A part time engineering internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the engineering field while working fewer hours than a full-time role, typically around 10-30 hours per week. These internships allow individuals to apply theoretical knowledge from their studies to real-world projects, often while continuing their education. Part time internships can help build valuable technical and professional skills, offer networking opportunities, and enhance a resume for future job applications.

Internship Overview
Make your mark on Hawaii's future with the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART). Join our engineering teams as an Engineering Intern and gain hands-on experience working alongside professionals in civil, mechanical, electrical, computer, or construction engineering.
You'll apply classroom knowledge to Honolulu's new, automated rail system, known as Skyline. It is the first fully driverless urban light metro system in the United States and represents the largest public infrastructure project in Hawaii's history.
This internship offers practical resume-building experience, professional mentorship, and the chance to develop teamwork and communication skills in a dynamic environment - technical skills employers value. Connect with mentors, expand your network, and lay the groundwork for a future career in engineering or public works, to help shape how people navigate the city of Honolulu for years to come.

  • Organize and maintain technical documentation.
  • Participate in project meetings and supervised site visits.
  • Support team goals with additional tasks as needed.

Qualifications

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Self-motivated and able to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Schedule
  • Part-time (up to 19 hours per week) during the academic year.
  • Full- or part-time options available during the summer
