What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Engineering Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, coursework in your specific discipline, and current enrollment in an accredited engineering program. Familiarity with technical tools like CAD software, MATLAB, and project management systems is often expected, and some positions may require proficiency in programming languages or lab equipment. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, teamwork, and effective communication help interns stand out. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt quickly to new tasks, and maximize their learning in a professional environment.

How do part-time engineering interns typically balance project responsibilities with their academic commitments?

Part-time engineering interns often juggle project tasks alongside their coursework, so effective time management is essential. Employers usually provide flexible schedules and clear project timelines to accommodate academic obligations. Interns are encouraged to communicate proactively with their supervisors to ensure deadlines are met and expectations are aligned. Collaborating with teammates and leveraging available resources can also help interns stay on track and gain valuable hands-on experience without compromising their studies.

What is a part time engineering internship?

A part time engineering internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the engineering field while working fewer hours than a full-time role, typically around 10-30 hours per week. These internships allow individuals to apply theoretical knowledge from their studies to real-world projects, often while continuing their education. Part time internships can help build valuable technical and professional skills, offer networking opportunities, and enhance a resume for future job applications.

What is the difference between Part Time Engineering Internship vs Part Time Engineering Technician?

AspectPart Time Engineering InternshipPart Time Engineering Technician
Required CredentialsTypically enrolled in an engineering degree program; some may have relevant courseworkAssociate's or bachelor's degree in engineering technology or related field

Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by engineering firms, companies, and organizations for student developmentTechnicians employed in manufacturing, construction, and engineering firms for technical support

While both roles involve engineering-related tasks, a Part Time Engineering Internship focuses on learning and gaining experience, often for students, whereas a Part Time Engineering Technician involves performing technical and hands-on work in engineering environments. The internship is more educational, while the technician role is more operational.

Job description

Structural Engineering Intern - Praxis Engineering

Ideas Into Action.

Location: San Luis Obispo, CA

Employment Type: Part-Time

About Praxis Engineering:

Praxis is a civil and structural engineering firm working on a diverse mix of projects across California: commercial, mixed-use, wineries and hospitality, multi-family, custom residential, and bridges. We're looking for a structural engineering intern to join our San Luis Obispo office this summer.

What you'll do:

Work alongside our structural team on active projects. Expect to:

  • Draft plans and exhibits in CAD under the direction of our project engineers
  • Support basic structural calculations
  • Revise and update drawings as designs evolve
  • Join site visits and construction-phase observations when schedules align
  • Learn how agency specifications and standards shape real projects

Who we're looking for

  • Sophomore or junior pursuing a degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Coursework in statics, strength of materials, structural analysis and CAD experience from class or a prior internship
  • Curious, collaborative, and willing to ask questions
  • Clear written and verbal communicator
  • Valid Class C driver's license for occasional site visits

Why Praxis:

We're a small firm with a wide project portfolio, which means interns get real exposure, not just one narrow slice of work. You'll be mentored by licensed engineers on projects that range from custom homes to $80M+ hospitality work. For the right person, this internship is a pipeline to a full-time role after graduation. Flexible around your academic calendar; part-time continuation during the school year possible.

To apply:

Send a cover letter and resume to HR@praxis-eng.com to be considered.
