How do part time engineers balance project responsibilities with limited working hours?

Part-time engineers often focus on specific project components or deliverables, allowing them to contribute effectively within their scheduled hours. Clear communication with supervisors and team members is essential to set realistic expectations and maintain progress. Many organizations use project management tools and regular check-ins to help part-time engineers stay aligned with full-time staff and meet deadlines. Flexibility and proactive planning are key to ensuring that work is completed efficiently without sacrificing quality.

What does a part time engineer do?

Part-time engineers develop and monitor the construction of the functional aspects of a product, structure, or system for their company or client. Unlike full-time engineers, part-time engineers typically work thirty hours or less a week. Specific job duties vary, depending on their specific engineering industry. For example, civil engineers design, construct, and maintain large infrastructure projects for municipalities and other agencies, such as bridges, highways, and airports. As the structures wear down, civil engineers reevaluate the needs of the area and may redesign the current structure or create a new system. Electrical engineers draft plans for electrical systems. Once the systems are created and installed, electrical engineers may also be responsible for maintaining the system to ensure it continues to run efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Engineer, you typically need a relevant engineering degree, foundational technical knowledge, and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with engineering software (such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or SolidWorks) and industry-specific certifications or systems is often required. Strong time management, effective communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for balancing multiple projects and collaborating with teams on a flexible schedule. These skills ensure that part-time engineers can deliver high-quality work efficiently while meeting the dynamic needs of employers.

Job description

If you’d rather spend your workday moving than sitting behind a desk, this may be your kind of job! Quality Counts (QC), the leader in traffic data collection, is hiring a part-time Traffic Field Technician to support projects throughout the greater Baton Rouge area.

This is a hands-on labor position for someone who is dependable, comfortable working outdoors and on the road, and takes pride in getting a job done right. Your work helps collect the real-world traffic data engineers and planners use to improve roads and infrastructure in local communities.

Field Operations Technician-Transportation - Duties:

  • Drive across Louisiana and neighboring states installing and retrieving traffic data collection equipment.
  • Perform moderate physical labor, including installing video detection cameras and pneumatic road tubes.
  • Work independently in the field while following project instructions, safety procedures, and deadlines.
  • Occasionally join teammates in nearby communities to conduct traffic surveys and parking studies.
  • Travel locally and, when opportunities arise, to projects in other parts of the country.
  • Download collected data from traffic equipment to internal computer systems.

Field Operations Technician-Transportation - Requirements:

  • Has relevant labor, field, construction, installation, maintenance, delivery, landscaping, warehouse, transportation, or other hands-on work experience.
  • Enjoys physical work and prefers being outdoors and on the move.
  • Comfortable with a variable part-time schedule: approximately 10-15 hours per week during slower seasons and 30+ hours, including overtime opportunities, during peak seasons.
  • Can commit to limited time off during May and October, our two busiest field seasons.
  • Reliable commute to Baton Rouge, LA required. This position starts daily from our office/warehouse before heading to field assignments.
  • Dependable and comfortable working independently without constant supervision.
  • Takes initiative and can troubleshoot when plans change in the field.
  • Pays attention to the details and takes pride in completing work correctly.
  • Can lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders (~15 feet), and safely operate power tools.
  • Comfortable using a computer for data downloading tasks.

Field Operations Technician-Transportation - Benefits:

  • 40 hours of annual Volunteer Time Off (VTO)
  • 40 hours (5-day equivalent) of annual part-time/sick pay
  • Opportunities for overtime during busy seasons
  • Hands-on, paid training
  • Company vehicle provided for travel to and from work sites
  • 401(k) with Employer Contribution (effective one year after employment)
  • Opportunities for local and nationwide travel
  • A job that keeps you moving, gets you outside, and gives you visible results at the end of the day
  • See the impact of your work firsthand as the data you collect helps engineers and planners make decisions about local roads and infrastructure

Field Operations Technician-Transportation - Salary: $20.00 per hour
