Job description

Job Title: Part-time EMT
Department: Public Safety Department – EMS Division
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Job Summary:
Responsible for assuming the role of patient advocate on all Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency runs. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): utilizing Region 4 standards as a minimum, provide appropriate patient extrication, treatment and transport; effectively evaluate patients’ signs and symptoms and apply first-aid or life support as needed; operate tools and equipment effectively; instill confidence in any patient suffering from illness or injury and displaying dignity, courtesy, discretion, skill, diligence and discipline; inspect, clean and maintain vehicles, equipment and property; proper completion of paperwork and forms; follow all departmental protocols and governing rules and regulations; other duties as requested to meet the needs of the Department and City of O’Fallon.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for responding to medical emergency calls and providing medical attention to sick or injured, including 9-1-1 calls.
  • Responsible for responding to structure fires and being readily available to treat sick or injured.
  • Responsible for patient evaluation, extrication, preparation for transport, and for the orderly transfer of the patient at a medical facility.
  • Responsible for the method, timeliness and level of medical care on all emergency calls.
  • Responsible for inspecting vehicles and equipment to promote fleet, personnel and patient safety.
  • Responsible for cleaning the vehicle and equipment.
  • Responsible for writing accurate, professional and legible reports.
  • Responsible for updating street directory and map.
  • Regular attendance.
Marginal Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintains working relationships and serves as liaison with other medical agencies and hospital facilities by coordinating activities with other crews, divisions and agencies.
  • Assists in identifying, developing and implementing departmental training programs.
  • Assists in conducting in-service training pertaining to EMS and EMT activities.
  • Assists in triaging emergency medical calls and deployment of resources.
  • Makes presentations to groups and interacts with citizens.
  • Conducts tours of facility.
  • Performs various other duties and functions as required or assigned within area of expertise or scope of the position.
Supervision Received:
This position reports to the Emergency Medical Services Supervisors or their designee.
Supervision Exercised:
None.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
  1. High School Diploma or GED and:
  1. Illinois EMT license or National Registered EMT
  1. Aligned, and in good standings with Region IV EMS System
  2. Valid Illinois Class C driver’s license or equivalent required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Considerable Knowledge of:
  1. EMT techniques and procedures.
  2. Standard business practices, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of:
  1. Relevant legal and technical terminology encountered in the course of work.
  2. Modern office management practices and procedures, equipment and systems.
Ability to:
  1. Meet all requirements of the EMT job description for the City of O’Fallon and demonstrate the example of all functions.
  2. Maintain a positive attitude; demonstrate a commitment to City goals and values, and to exhibit a positive overall customer service-oriented manner and a willingness to work together in a team environment.
  3. Maintain continuing education and four-year recertification requirements of the State of Illinois.
  4. Communicate strongly both orally and in writing.

  12. Perform and accomplish requirements of the job using appropriate general office equipment (i.e., fax machine, copy machine, calculator, multi-function telephone).
  13. Use basic computer word processing, presentation and spreadsheet/database management applications (i.e. Microsoft Word/Access/Excel applications).
  14. Use and set up equipment needed for presentations (i.e., projector, laptop computer, television and VCR).
  15. Comprehend and make inferences from written materials.
  16. Understand, interpret, explain and apply relevant policies, procedures and regulations.
  17. Attend to details, calculate numerical formulas and verify accuracy of amounts and calculations.
  18. Perform heavy physical work exerting up to 110 pounds on an occasional basis; lift and carry 87 pounds regularly on inclined surfaces; push 49.5 pounds and pull 38.5 pounds regularly; ascend and descend truck amp; other steps regularly; reaching an average of 23 inches from a standing position regularly; stoop, crouch and kneel regularly then transfer back to standing; transferring items from left to right hand (and back) while balancing; perform such activities as fingering, grasping, and repetitive tasks.
  19. See clearly at close and far distances (good visual acuity), identify and distinguish colors, adjust focus and see to the right and left while focused on an object (peripheral vision).
  20. Recognize and respect diversity and work effectively with peoples of other cultures.
