Part Time Drafting information

Do drafters make a lot of money?

Part time drafters' earnings vary based on experience, location, and industry, but they generally earn less than full-time drafters. Entry-level positions may pay hourly wages around minimum wage, while experienced drafters with skills in CAD software can earn higher pay, especially with certifications or specialized knowledge.

What is part time drafting?

Part time drafting involves creating technical drawings or plans, usually for architecture, engineering, or manufacturing projects, on a part-time basis. Drafters use computer-aided design (CAD) software to convert ideas and specifications into precise diagrams. Part-time positions are ideal for students, those seeking work-life balance, or individuals supplementing other jobs. The role may include updating existing drawings, collaborating with engineers or architects, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Is AI replacing AutoCAD?

AI is increasingly being integrated into drafting tools, including AutoCAD, to automate repetitive tasks and enhance design efficiency. However, skilled drafters are still essential for complex, creative, and precise work, as AI currently complements rather than replaces human expertise in drafting roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Drafting professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Drafting professional, you need proficiency in technical drawing, attention to detail, and a background in drafting or a related field, often supported by a relevant certification or coursework. Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks is typically required for creating and modifying technical plans. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with engineers and architects help set you apart. These skills are essential for producing accurate, high-quality drawings that support project success and efficient teamwork.

Are drafters in high demand?

Drafting is a skilled trade with steady demand in industries such as architecture, engineering, and construction. Employment for drafters is expected to grow at a rate similar to the average for all occupations, with proficiency in CAD software increasing job prospects.

Will AI replace draftsman?

AI technology can assist draftsmen by automating repetitive tasks and improving efficiency, but it is unlikely to fully replace skilled draftsmen who rely on expertise, creativity, and judgment. Drafting roles often require understanding complex design concepts and adapting to project-specific needs, which AI currently cannot fully replicate. Therefore, draftsmen will continue to play a vital role alongside AI tools in the drafting process.

What is the difference between Part Time Drafting vs Part Time CAD Technician?

Work EnvironmentArchitectural, engineering, or construction firmsDesign firms, engineering companies, manufacturing
Industry UsageCommonly used in architecture and engineeringUsed across various design and engineering fields
Job FocusCreating technical drawings and plansDeveloping detailed CAD models and drawings

Part Time Drafting involves creating technical drawings manually or with basic CAD tools, focusing on drafting plans. Part Time CAD Technicians typically work with advanced CAD software to develop detailed models. While both roles require technical skills and industry knowledge, CAD Technicians often have more specialized software training, making their work more detailed and precise.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time drafting professionals, and how can they be managed?

Part-time drafting professionals often face challenges such as adapting to varying project timelines, staying updated with changing software, and integrating effectively with full-time team members despite working fewer hours. To manage these, clear communication with supervisors about availability and deadlines is crucial, as is maintaining proficiency in drafting tools like AutoCAD. Proactively seeking updates on project changes and participating in team meetings, even remotely, can help ensure smooth collaboration and timely delivery of work.

Job description

Laser Institute of America | Orlando, FL | Part-Time | In-Office | $25.00 per hour | 16 to 20 hours per week

ABOUT LIA
The Laser Institute of America is the professional society for laser safety. Since 1968, we have served the global laser community through education, standards development, and industry advocacy. Our small, mission-driven team is headquartered in the Orlando, FL area.

THE ROLE
LIA is hiring a part-time coordinator to own the operational backbone of our laser safety standards development program. You do not need prior standards experience; we provide thorough training, along with the tools and templates to get you up to speed quickly. What matters most is judgment, accuracy, and follow-through: keeping a detailed, multi-step process moving correctly and on time. This is a flexible, in-office, part-time role for someone who is organized, detail-obsessed, quick to act, and comfortable using technology, including AI tools, to work efficiently. The role runs 15 to 20 hours per week, with occasional additional hours during active publication cycles, and reports to the Director of Operations.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

Standards Committee Administration

  • Coordinate and schedule standards committee meetings, including tracking member participation, updating rosters, and following through on action items
  • Administer committee ballots through the balloting platform, including balloting-group formation, interest-category tracking, and accurate tallying and classification of votes
  • Document official committee activities and ballots in preparation for ANSI audits
  • Help keep committee procedures aligned with ANSI's Essential Requirements, using our documented procedures and AI assistant for reference
  • Help committee members follow our established conventions and procedures
  • Collect and maintain consensus body membership applications and rosters
  • Coordinate communications with ANSI, including audits, submitting standards drafts for approval, and requesting Project Initiation Notifications
  • Open public review periods for standards drafts and track development timelines
  • Collaborate with committee chairs as needed
  • Manage the pre-approved annual committee budget
  • Provide administrative coordination for the annual committee meeting, including preparing the agenda and the meeting presentation, collecting subcommittee chair reports, and tracking participation

  • Coordinate officer elections and the seating of new members, and follow through on meeting action items

Publications and Copyright

  • Format and proof standards documents before publication
  • Register approved standards with the U.S. Copyright Office
  • Review and approve copyright requests
  • Respond to and track requests for clarification or interpretation of standards
  • Provide customer support to committee website users
  • Manage standards print production with vendors, including print quotes, reviewing gallery proofs, and coordinating deliveries
  • Maintain standards inventory and manage reseller relationships and publication updates

Other Support

  • As is common in a nonprofit, this role may take on other tasks as organizational needs arise.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Required

  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat, specifically with formatting, version control, and file security
  • Sound judgment and a habit of checking your own work for accuracy
  • Comfortable learning and using AI tools; much of the role's efficiency depends on it
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects at once
  • Comfortable in a structured, process-driven environment with established procedures
  • Comfortable coordinating and following up with volunteer committee members and chairs in a professional, diplomatic way

Preferred

  • A background in detail-driven, deadline-oriented work, for example administration, coordination, publications, operations, or teaching. We value transferable skills over specific years or titles
  • Familiarity with ANSI standards development or similar regulatory or compliance frameworks
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Education, or a related field

WHY THIS ROLE

  • Flexible, part-time hours that fit around your life
  • Meaningful work at a mission-driven society that has anchored the laser community since 1968
  • Set up for success with built-in AI support and hands-on training

This is a great opportunity for former educators or administrative professionals with strong written communication skills who are looking for flexible, part-time hours.

OUR CORE VALUES

  • Curiosity: Seeks feedback, asks questions to understand context, and visibly applies what they learn.
  • Collaboration: Shares information that helps others and includes input from across the organization.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Schedule: Flexible within core business hours
This position may require occasional lifting up to 50 pounds and extended periods of sitting or standing. Occasional travel to committee meetings or conferences may be required.
