DescriptionApply by Thursday, June 11, 2026The City's Internship Program is designed to provide hands-on experience and exposure to the functions and responsibilities of the Public Works/Engineering department. This part-time, training-level position has flexible work hours depending on availability and schedules.
The incumbent is expected to work up to 20 hours per week.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Work is performed under direct supervision and is reviewed by a supervisor while in progress and upon completion. Interns in the Public Works/Engineering Department assist with technical support to engineering and public works staff; perform various field work and inspections; conduct research; compile and analyze data; and perform administrative and clerical duties.
Essential Functions- Provide information and assistance to the general public and project applicants.
- Receive and assist in the processing of permits, improvement plans and subdivision map applications.
- Perform minor drafting related to preparation of plans and specifications for public works projects and engineering staff reports.
- Prepare notices and advertising for construction bids, verify bids reference and background checks.
- Assist in public contract administration for a variety of city services.
- Maintain a variety of engineering/public works maps including city streets and public utilities and assist in conducting engineering and technical surveys and studies.
- Perform data collection and analysis on various projects.
- Type and proofread letters and memos and prepare correspondence, forms and brochures.
- Organize, reproduce, disseminate and file documents including special mailings.
Qualification GuidelinesEXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION: - Must be a high school graduate and a current undergraduate student, graduate student of an accredited college or university with a major in Engineering (Civil, Structural, Transportation), Construction Management, or a related field.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:Must possess or be able to obtain a valid California Class C driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS:- Knowledge of basic research.
- Skill in preparing clear and concise written reports.
- Maintain tactfulness and courtesy in explaining City procedures and requirements.
- Perform mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
- Operate a computer and use word processing and spreadsheet software application programs.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with residents, developers, contractors, vendors, office staff, management and other public and private representatives.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and other department representatives.
- Safe driving principles and practices.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:- Ability to work in a standard office environment requiring prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, crouching and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
- Movements frequently and regularly require using the wrists, hands and fingers to operate computers and office equipment.
- Occasional overtime, weekend and/or evening work may be required.
- Ability to hear and convey detailed or important instructions or information verbally and accurately.
- Average visual acuity to prepare and read documents.
- May be exposed to outdoor conditions and inclement weather.

SALARY RANGE: Composed of six (6) steps - Entry step through E step (Except management positions). Each step represents an increase of approximately five (5) percent.
RETIREMENT: Provided through deferred compensation 457 plan administered by Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS). Employee pays member contribution of 7.5%.
SICK LEAVE: 4 hours per month.
VACATION: 4 hours per month after 1 year of employment.
HOLIDAY PAY: 5 hours for each observed holiday after 1 year of employment.
DISCRETIONARY BENEFIT: $23.08 per pay period after 1 year of employment
