Job Description

Job Title: Multilingual Learner Teacher (Part-Time/50%) Salary Schedule: State Salary Schedule; CHCCS Salary Page Reports To: School Principal Salary Grade: Teacher Work Location: Phoenix Academy  FLSA Status: Exempt Work Schedule: 10 Month   Position Summary

At CHCCS, a Multilingual Learner (MLL) teacher's goal is to provide students with the help, counsel, and learning experience they need to make progress toward educational goals established, to create a flexible instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth, and to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to live a rewarding life in an ever-changing world. 

MLL teachers instruct students whose dominant language is a language other than English. The goal is to teach the NC English Language Proficiency Standard Course of Study.  MLL teachers instruct English language learners to read, speak, listen, and write English, so they can achieve grade level proficiency in all academic areas. MLL teachers must be highly knowledgeable in the content and structure of the English language as well as the methodology for teaching English to non-native speakers.

Essential Duties
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials
    • Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals
    • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these objectives to the students
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media
  • Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student's progress and interprets the school program
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and through self-selected professional growth activities
  • Participates in curriculum development programs as required
    • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
  • Instructs pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals
    • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects, and communicates these objectives to pupils.
  • Evaluates pupil performance and growth using a variety of formative and summative evaluation tools
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student's progress and interprets the school program
  • Collaborates with colleagues to promote an optimal learning environment for pupils
  • Coordinates and administers the WIDA Screener and ACCESS 2.0 English language tests.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures 
Education/Experience Requirements
  • Holds or is eligible to hold a N.C. teaching license; must have ESL licensure area
  • Certification in additional core content licensure areas preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Prior teaching experience preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable
