Job description

Overview
The Macalester College Admissions Office seeks multiple Seasonal Remote Application Readers to support our full-time staff in the application review process for our upcoming application rounds. This position supports full-time staff in reviewing and evaluating admissions applications by assessing candidate materials while synthesizing and writing succinct and informative comments to be shared with the Admissions Committee. Candidates are encouraged to carefully review the description below and include a preference of schedule and availability clearly in their application materials.
This position is entirely remote. There are no in-person working hours or assignments. Candidates are expected to work from within the United States and be able to provide their own computer with reliable internet access and audio/video capabilities.
The position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities & Qualifications
Through the committee-based evaluation model, Seasonal Remote Application Readers will work synchronously with full-time Admissions staff via Zoom to:
  • Evaluate applications for admission according to the standards set by the Admissions Office
  • Analyze applicants' high school curriculum, academic performance record, extracurricular involvements, and potential to contribute to the Macalester community
  • Synthesize, write and edit a short narrative summary of the candidate's application
  • Ensure timely completion of application reviews within established timelines

Scheduling Requirements:
  • Candidates are expected to work 14-28 hours per week from November 2 - December 4 and January 4-30, as well as training and onboarding the week of October 22-30. Application readers work full-day shifts between 9:00am CST - 5:00pm CST up to four days per week. All candidates hired for this position will be offered five weeks of work in 2026 and four weeks of work in 2027. Application volume and demand for admissions application readers is subject to change and influence available hours beyond the above guarantee.

Strong preference will be given to candidates with work availability between 9:00am CST - 5:00pm CST on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Qualifications:
It is expected that an employee in this role:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Have an appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education.
  • Possess knowledge of the overall landscape of selective higher education.
  • Exercise a high level of discretion and sensitive judgement and must be able to utilize a background of professional knowledge and experience to interpret guidelines which will apply to a large, complex, detailed array of objective and subjective information. All information is highly sensitive and confidential.
  • Demonstrate a high proficiency with technology and web-based applications as all applicant files are reviewed electronically via an online platform.
  • Have access to a home workspace, including a personal computer with up-to-date security and internet browser, access to reliable internet and audio/video capabilities.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Macalester's mission and values.

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Direct experience as a student or staff member at a highly selective liberal arts college.
  • Direct experience working in college access, college admissions, and/or college counseling.
  • Possess knowledge of and/or sensitivity to issues related to the multiple backgrounds and experiences students come with and may write about in their application.

Candidates may not be: Concurrently employed by or enrolled as a student at Macalester. Concurrently reading applications for another college or university. Currently employed as a high school/CBO counselor or independent admissions counselor/consultant
