Position Summary
The State University of New York at Cortland plans to hire an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department to teach courses in psychology (based on department need and the candidate's specialization), conduct research, and engage in service beginning in Fall 2027.

The Psychology Department at SUNY Cortland offers a B.A. and B.S. in Psychology, a minor in Psychology, a minor in Psychology in Schools, and a minor in Forensic Psychology. Our typical class size is 30, while class sizes in upper division labs and capstone courses tend to be around 12-20. We currently have over 350 Psychology majors and 14 tenure-track faculty with a typical teaching load of 3 courses per semester. Our program is aligned with the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines for an undergraduate psychology major. Faculty have access to modern research and teaching facilities. The department is housed in the original, historically renovated Old Main building.

Starting Salary: $68,900 + depending on experience (DOE)

Major Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate courses in the discipline based on department need and the applicant's area of expertise.
• Develop or continue a program of active research, preferably involving undergraduate research assistants.
• Additional responsibilities include engaging in service on departmental and university committees, participating in university-wide governance, advising undergraduate students, and maintaining a commitment to undergraduate education.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

• Reports to the Department Chair.
• Works collaboratively with departmental faculty and staff.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Psychology or Ph.D. in Cognitive Science by the time of appointment
• Candidates will have the educational background to effectively teach courses in Cognitive Psychology and foundational courses in our department (Introductory Psychology, Statistics, Research Methods, Writing Intensive Research Courses)

Preferred Qualifications

• Evidence of quality teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
• A research program that could include undergraduate research assistants.
• A demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students with diverse lived experiences and of all academic backgrounds and social and cultural identities.
