Job description

Deputy Sheriff - Hourly/Part Time 

$32 - $35 per hour

The City of Falls Church Sheriff’s Office is recruiting for a part-time, hourly Deputy Sheriff with Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement certification.  This Deputy will perform court security, prisoner transportation, civil process, traffic enforcement and other law enforcement functions including emergency response in a busy and growing small agency and jurisdiction environment.

The City of Falls Church is an independent municipality located six miles from the nation's capital situated between the large urban counties of Arlington and Fairfax with its own court, clerk system and sheriff’s office.  The City is known for its urban village community structure, quality customer and resident service, a nationally ranked school system and extensive community activities.

Required, No Exceptions:

  • Mandatory and comprehensive background checks to include all past employment and fingerprint criminal history. The Sheriff’s Office may reject any applicant based on any of the Sheriff’s Office’s interpretation of any aspect or finding of the investigation.
  • U.S. citizen or in the process of and qualified for U.S. citizenship.
  • At least 21 years of age at hire.
  • Valid United States (state) Operator’s (driver’s) license of the applicant’s resident state.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Non-user of any tobacco product (including Vape)
  • 20/20 corrected vision. Near/night vision, ability to see and decipher color variation, peripheral test clearance.
  • Excellent physical condition and acceptable physical medical examination.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time including in inclement and extreme weather, as well as extended sitting/operation of agency emergency vehicles.
  • Ability to engage in criminal apprehension and criminal and traffic enforcement, and to exhibit required proficiency in firearms and emergency vehicle operation.

Disqualifiers (Partial List):

  • The Sheriff’s Office may reject any applicant for any arrest, plea or conviction that occurred at any age for any offense including misdemeanors.
  • Conviction, plea of guilty or no contest/Alford to any felony or any offense if committed in Virginia would be deemed a felony.
  • Class 1 or 2 misdemeanor committed as an adult to include DUI.
  • Positive result on any pre-employment or other drug screen.
  • More than one moving traffic violation within 12 months or two moving traffic violations within 24 months of the date of application.
  • Any activity, including social or related media, communication or circumstance deemed by the Sheriff’s Office to be unacceptable for the position.

Hours:

This is a part-time position working up to eight hours on court days.  May be required to work community events and other circumstances including numerous specialized details. Total hours per week will not typically exceed 19.

Salary:

The pay range for this position is $32 - $35 per hour and there are no fringe benefits.
