SUMMARY
This is a Part-Time Staff Pool in our Continuing Education Workforce Development (CEWD) department for available assignments during the academic year. Applications are considered throughout the academic year and reviewed based on departmental needs. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
The Skilled Training Rewarding Independence and Vocational Education (STRIVE) Program is seeking a Part-Time Special Education teacher to provide a vocational training opportunity for students with developmental disabilities. This individual serves as the lead instructor and recruiter for all training within STRIVE and other related programs within the department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
- Coordinates, plans, develops, implements, supervises, and evaluates department curriculum and courses to serve the diverse needs of students with special needs in an inclusive environment.
- Actively recruits and interviews potential students.
- Develops, maintains, and supervises long-range institutional effectiveness assessment plans that may include planning, developing, and reporting the program mission, goals, and program/student learning outcomes.
- Assess students' academic progress, identify areas of improvement, and provide timely feedback to students and relevant stakeholders.
- Assists in the recruitment, hiring, training and evaluating of support staff.
- Use available technologies and identify adaptive techniques as appropriate teaching and learning tools to accommodate students' learning styles and abilities to be included during classroom curriculum, related activities, and college events.
- Effectively communicates to present information accurately and clearly to support services, student advocates and guardians, student accessibility service providers, and other entities collaborating with the student.
- Maintain a professional and cordial relationship with colleagues, students, parents, community partners and affiliates to assist in advocating for program and student supports.
- Adhere to local, state, and federal guidelines regarding confidentiality and ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations related to special education, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Assists in the development, distribution and collection of assessments for courses and program objectives.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, attendance, and other relevant data as required by the college.
- Participate in professional development activities to stay current with best practices in special education and teaching methodologies.
- Attend faculty meetings, workshops, and departmental gatherings as needed to foster a collaborative and cohesive academic community.
- Provides recommendations and updates to Program Director and appropriate college committees regarding curriculum, instruction, and division operations
- Other duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The incumbent typically works in a classroom environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of a classroom. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day. This is a part-time position with flexible working hours based on the college's academic schedule and the needs of the special education program.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to twenty (20) pounds.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or a related field from an accredited institution
- Valid teaching certification or licensure in Special Education
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of various instructional strategies, assessment techniques, and assistive technologies used in special education
- Basic computer skills
- Demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English
- Effective classroom management skills to provide an inclusive and engaging learning environment

- Must be flexible and understands a minimum number of hours is not guaranteed and that classes may be cancelled and/or rescheduled with minimal notice due to student need, student enrollment and/or program needs
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- One-year prior experience working with people with diverse learning needs required, same experience in a higher education setting
