User Experience Editor (Temporary)

This position provides valuable feedback from a student user viewpoint for university, Independent Study, and high school courses. Editors in this position help edit and review courses, and they essentially complete these courses as if they were students. This person will be responsible for reviewing newer student editors' work and ensuring it is error free and ready to publish. This is a temporary part-time position until August 31, 2026.

Note: This is a part-time position for 17.5 hours per week.


What you'll do in this position:

  • The SUX editorworkswith theCE Editing Teamto help train and mentor new student team members; also helps new students byreviewingand double-checking every page they edit to ensure accuracy and integrity.
  • This person reviews all online high school courses in a student user experience capacity.
  • This person reviews university andindependent study courses for accuracy prior to publishing.
  • This personassistsdesignersin keeping the perpetual queue of courses requiring editing on track and helping meet deadlines.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Minimum Required: Bachelor's degree in English, editing and publishing, or linguistics
  • Ability to balance efficiency and accuracy in editing full courses
  • Extensive writing and editing skills
  • Ability to identify gaps in and ways to improve the flow and cadence of instructional content
  • Ability to diplomatically suggest editorial changes to designers
  • Extensive knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and other major style guides (APA, MLA, etc.)
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships
  • Outstanding communication skills, particularly in explaining and training editorial style guidelines to newer student editors
  • Ability to work in an iterative and incremental development environment
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in MS Word, Canvas, Adobe Acrobat, and other learning management systems

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in editing; prior experience on a university-level publication team, e.g., Stowaway, Schwa, or Marriott Student Review

Pay Grade: 51

Typical Starting Pay: $28.25 to $36.25 per hour

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate's job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
