What is a part time business?

A Part Time Business job typically refers to a role where an individual works fewer hours than a full-time position while managing or contributing to business operations. This can include freelancing, consulting, running a small business, or working a flexible corporate role. These jobs are ideal for those seeking work-life balance, supplemental income, or gradual business growth. Responsibilities vary widely depending on the industry and specific job role.

What kinds of tasks and responsibilities are typical in a part time business role?

In a part-time business role, your daily tasks may include administrative support, basic bookkeeping, customer service, data entry, or assisting with project coordination, depending on the industry and specific company needs. You might also be responsible for maintaining records, updating databases, or helping with marketing and communications initiatives. These roles typically involve working closely with other team members and departments, often providing critical support to keep operations running smoothly. Part-time schedules can offer flexibility, making these roles ideal for balancing work with personal or educational commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a part time business position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a part-time business position, you should possess basic business acumen, organizational abilities, and at least a high school diploma or relevant experience. Familiarity with common business software such as Microsoft Office, basic accounting tools, or point-of-sale systems is often expected. Strong interpersonal communication, dependability, and time management are standout soft skills for this type of role. These skills and qualities ensure you can efficiently handle tasks, collaborate with others, and contribute value within a flexible, often fast-paced work environment.

What is the best business to start as part-time?

Starting a part-time business such as freelancing, consulting, or online selling allows flexibility and low initial investment. These options often require skills in areas like digital marketing, customer service, or specific trades, and can be managed alongside other commitments.

Job description

As a Marketplace Associate Business Developer, you will help grow Best Buy Marketplace by identifying, recruiting, and onboarding high-quality sellers. This requires a consultative approach to understand seller goals, challenges, and growth opportunities. As a trusted advisor, you will build strong relationships and guide sellers through the full recruitment process.
This role goes beyond seller acquisition and provides an opportunity to shape a curated marketplace. You will recruit the right sellers, brands, and products to support category goals, expand assortment, and meet customer needs. In partnership with internal teams, you will expand selection across core technology categories. You will also identify opportunities in adjacent and complementary categories that resonate with Best Buy customers. These efforts broaden our assortment, fill selection gaps, and introduce customers to products they may not traditionally find in stores.
In partnership with onboarding and internal teams, you will help sellers launch efficiently and set them up for long-term success. You will balance the needs of customers, sellers, and internal partners while driving outcomes across the business. Success in this role requires an ownership mindset, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to work across teams in a fast-paced, evolving marketplace environment.
This role is hybrid, which means you will be required to work on site Monday through Thursday at the Best Buy corporate office in Richfield, Minnesota. You can work virtually from home or another nonBest Buy location on Friday. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process.
What you'll do
  • Identify, recruit, negotiate with, onboard, and launch high-quality sellers aligned with marketplace growth and category goals.
  • Build relationships with prospective sellers and position Best Buy Marketplace as a curated marketplace that helps sellers reach customers and grow their business.
  • Own the seller journey from initial outreach through launch, including pipeline management, relationship building, and cross-functional coordination.
  • Partner with Account Management, Operations, and Category Management teams to support category goals, close assortment gaps, and expand selection across priority categories. Basic qualifications

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of industry experience in merchandising, e-commerce, or marketplace
  • 5+ years of combined experience in business development, sales, brand management, account management, or supply chain
  • Experience building relationships and influencing stakeholders without direct authority
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to executive and C-Suite audiences
  • Ability to analyze business performance metrics, develop forecasts, and use data to inform decisions
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred qualifications
  • Experience with lead prospecting, pipeline management, and enterprise sales
  • Experience in marketplace ecosystems such as Amazon, Walmart, Target Plus, or other third-party marketplace models
  • Proficient using CRM platforms such as Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics
  • Demonstrated ownership mindset with a track record of driving initiatives from concept through execution
  • Curiosity, adaptability, and a desire to help shape and improve a growing business within an ambiguous environment
