Compensation: $22.33 to $37.00 per hour(Exact rate is determined on a case-by-case basis commensurate with experience level, as well as education and certifications pertaining to each position which may be above the listed job requirements.)

How You Will Fulfill Your Potential (Responsibilities)
  • Perform a variety of histologic procedures on a variety of patient specimens
  • Provide the Pathologists with quality slides with which to make their diagnosis
  • Assist the Pathologist with Frozen Sections
  • Collect, change and dispose of chemical solutions from the processors, histologic medical waste and chemical fixatives
  • Perform, evaluate, and document quality control according to established guidelines
  • Participate in departmental quality assurance activities
  • Perform the following procedures on surgical and autopsy specimens:
    • Identification
    • Specimen processing
    • Fixation/dehydration
    • Embedding
    • Microtomy/sectioning of embedded tissue
    • Cover-slipping
    • Staining
    • Managing Immunohistochemical procedures

What You Bring (Qualifications)
Education/Accredited Programs
  • 2-year Associates in Science in a certified histological technician program or higher required

Licenses/Certificates/Registrations
  • New York State License Histotechnician/ ASCP board certification required

Experience/Abilities
  • Ability to read and understand Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) and departmental procedures.
  • Ability to understand and comply with department/organizational safety manuals
  • Ability to understand communication with attending pathologist and or pathology assistant in both written and oral forms
  • Ability to demonstrate effective problem solving and team building skills
  • Ability to coach and orient newer staff regarding SOPS
