Position Summary

The Tutoring Program at San Juan College has openings for individuals interested in working with a diverse group of colleagues who want to make a difference in the lives of students and grow professionally. Applicants must be committed to helping students from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. Work schedule to be arranged. Weekend, evening, online tutoring, and branch campus hours may be assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities:
A tutor's primary responsibility is to assist students in learning and understanding course material within the tutor's content area(s), with the goal of helping the student become an independent and self-reliant learner. A tutor is expected to perform duties face-to-face and remotely.
Tutors most commonly work with individual students, but should be prepared to work with small groups of students as well. Tutors are not instructors and cannot be left alone in a classroom with students without direction from Tutoring Center management. However, they may be embedded/assigned to assist in one or more sections of a course as well as delivering homework and test prep to help those students.
All tutors are evaluated at minimum once each semester on multiple things including: length of employment,CRLAlevel, level of education or training, number of subjects able to tutor, whether the tutor complies with the Tutoring Center and San Juan College policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Tutors are evaluated as an employee, their effectiveness as a tutor, as a tutor, as a role model, and using the San Juan College values (iCare).
Tutors should also be willing and able to refer students to appropriate services on campus. All tutors are expected to attend all trainings (Friday afternoons from 12:30-3:00) as well as completing all additional training as assigned. Tutors must track and submit work time, time spent tutoring, and tutoring session notes for department record keeping.
Tutoring is professional work, and tutors are expected to apply and improve in the professional skills addressed in training. Tutors must dress appropriately for a professional position. Tutors must always communicate respectfully, professionally, and promptly with students/clients , faculty, and staff.
Perform reasonable related duties as assigned in order to assist with the overall functioning of the Tutoring Center.
Tutoring at San Juan College could include:
Class visits (promoting the Tutoring Center), work with instructors to tutor/enhance classroom and/or workshop setting (requires specialized training), group tutoring/study sessions, create manipulatives and other materials for classes or subjects, assist with developing promotional and training materials.
We are in search of tutors with the following content expertise:
Math:
o Lower-level - All levels of math from Pre-algebra through College Algebra
o Upper-level - All levels of math from Pre-algebra through CalculusIII
o Specialized - Statistics and/or Career specific math
Sciences - All Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, Physics, Geology, Engineering, and/or Health Care Sciences
Trades and Technologies - Any Energy, Trades, or Technology classes
Writing - English, Reading, and/or other Humanities courses
Language - Navajo, Spanish, German, French, Russian and American Sign Language.
Business - Accounting, Economics, Computer Science, Business, and/or Marketing
Tutoring positions depend upon need and class availability.
Qualifications Required:
Advanced knowledge in their discipline of interest as demonstrated by:
  • Associate's degree or higher level of education, or
  • Specific certification essential for the job, or
  • Equivalent/specialized experience, such as language fluency/proficiency at an academic level
  • Successful completion of courses in the discipline
  • Two (2) recommendations from faculty or previous employer
  • Good communication skills in terms of providing students with academic tutoring assistance required.
Preferred:
  • GPAof at least 3.0 in the courses tutored (must have received a "B" in the classes tutored)
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring in a multi-cultural environment
  • Experience teaching in secondary or post-secondary settings
  • Experience teaching college level courses in writing, foreign languages, science, business, or math
  • Knowledge of different learning preferences and experience with students of diverse learning abilities.
