What types of tasks and responsibilities can a 15-year-old expect in a part-time job?

As a 15-year-old working part-time, you'll typically be assigned entry-level tasks that are age-appropriate and comply with labor laws. Common responsibilities include assisting customers, stocking shelves, cleaning, basic food preparation, or helping with organization in retail, food service, or local businesses. In Tennessee, 15-year-olds can work in certain jobs such as retail, food service, or amusement parks, but they are limited by child labor laws that restrict hours and types of work. They must obtain a work permit and adhere to state-specific regulations for minors. Employers often require proof of age and may have additional policies for young workers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time worker at age 15, and why are they important?

To thrive as a part-time worker at age 15, you generally need a strong work ethic, punctuality, and the ability to follow instructions, with any required permits or parental consent depending on local laws. Familiarity with basic point-of-sale (POS) systems, customer service protocols, or safety procedures may be necessary depending on the job type. Reliability, enthusiasm, and effective communication help young workers stand out and build trust with supervisors and customers. These skills are crucial for developing a positive reputation, gaining valuable experience, and ensuring workplace safety and satisfaction.
