What is a part time accounting?

A part time accounting job involves performing accounting tasks, such as bookkeeping, preparing financial reports, managing invoices, and reconciling accounts, but on a reduced schedule compared to a full-time role. These positions are ideal for individuals seeking flexibility, such as students, parents, or those supplementing other work. Part time accountants may work for businesses, accounting firms, or as independent contractors, and their responsibilities can vary depending on the employer's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time accounting professional?

To thrive as a Part Time Accounting professional, you need a solid understanding of basic accounting principles, proficiency in bookkeeping, and often an associate’s degree or relevant coursework in accounting. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Excel, and possibly experience with ERP systems is highly valuable. Attention to detail, time management, and strong organizational skills help individuals excel in balancing multiple clients or tasks within limited hours. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate financial records, effective workflow, and compliance with reporting standards, which are crucial for supporting business operations.

How does a part-time accounting role typically integrate with full-time accounting staff and broader finance teams?

Part-time accountants usually work closely with full-time staff by focusing on specific tasks such as reconciliations, data entry, or assisting with month-end closings. They often coordinate with full-time accountants to ensure consistency and accuracy in financial records, and may attend regular team meetings to stay aligned on priorities. Communication is key, as part-time team members need to stay updated on ongoing projects and deadlines. While their schedules are more flexible, part-time accountants are expected to maintain high standards of organization and responsiveness to support the overall finance team’s objectives.

What is the difference between Part Time Accounting vs Bookkeeping?

Can you be a part time accountant as a side job?

Part time accounting roles are often suitable as side jobs, especially for individuals with accounting skills, certifications, or experience in bookkeeping or tax preparation. Many part time accountants work flexible hours and may use accounting software like QuickBooks or Excel. However, workload and scheduling depend on the employer or client requirements, and some positions may require professional licensure or specific qualifications.

Can you work part-time as an accountant?

Yes, accounting is a common profession with many part-time opportunities available, especially for those with relevant skills and certifications such as a CPA or bookkeeping experience. Part-time accounting roles often involve tasks like financial reporting, payroll, and tax preparation, and may require proficiency with accounting software. These positions can be suitable for students, those seeking flexible schedules, or individuals balancing other commitments.

Job description

Description

Reporting to the Controller, the Temporary Part-Time Accountant is a part-time contract position that supports the daily accounting functions of Mary's Place. The role sits between a staff and senior accountant: alongside transactional work such as accounts payable, deposits and cash receipts, and general ledger entries, the Temporary Part-Time Accountant is expected to independently prepare month-end reconciliations, maintain supporting schedules, and help ensure accurate accounting and record keeping in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

The Temporary Part-Time Accountant assists the Controller and Finance Team with the annual audit, grant and contract reporting, and the preparation of financial reports. The right candidate is experienced enough to work with limited supervision while remaining hands-on with day-to-day accounting tasks.

The Temporary Part-Time Accountant actively engages in Mary's Place racial equity work - striving for equitable outcomes and taking responsibility for creating, maintaining, and affirming communities for people of color, immigrants, and refugees, trans and gender-nonconforming people, and other populations who routinely encounter systemic oppressions.

This is a part-time, temporary, hourly, non-exempt position. The role is expected to last 3-6 months, with the possibility of extension, and will average approximately 15 hours per week. The hourly wage is $38-$48/hr. DOE.

This role reports to the Controller and does not supervise staff. The position is primarily remote, with occasional required in-person meetings in the Seattle area.

The schedule is flexible and will be arranged in collaboration with the Controller, with flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends as needed to support month-end close, reporting, and audit deadlines. While specific days and hours are flexible, availability during core business hours, generally between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time, is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enter transaction data and process AP payments, including direct client assistance (DCA).
  • Make deposits and enter cash receipt transactions.
  • Ensure accounts receivable receipts, accounts payable, and payroll expenditures are reviewed, reconciled, and posted timely and accurately.
  • Prepare assigned month-end close tasks and initial reconciliations for designated general ledger, bank, credit card, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Maintain necessary supporting documents and schedules.
  • Responsible for expense allocation entries and monthly income reconciliations.
  • Assist with reconciling in-kind gifts and ensuring values are properly recorded to the general ledger.
  • Support city contract invoicing and grant reporting requirements; help ensure expenditures align with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial reports and the annual budget process.
  • Maintain internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Prepare and maintain policy and process documentation within the Finance Team.
  • Assist the Controller and Finance Team with all aspects of the annual external audit, including audit readiness, checklists, and schedules.
  • Provide back-up and cross-coverage for other Finance Team members during busy periods and absences.
  • Other projects and tasks as assigned.

Requirements

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or an AA in Accounting with equivalent work experience.
  • At least 2-4 years of professional accounting experience; non-profit accounting experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of general accounting and financial reporting procedures in accordance with GAAP.
  • Working knowledge and experience with QuickBooks Online is required.
  • Experience with Paylocity, bill.com, and Divvy is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications (Teams, SharePoint, Outlook) is required.
  • Advanced Excel skills (formulas, pivot tables, and linked complex workbooks).
  • Strong data entry accuracy, efficiency, and a detail-oriented, analytical approach to work.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills; proven ability to multitask, set priorities, and meet deadlines with limited supervision.
  • Ability to protect the confidentiality of sensitive information using sound judgment.
  • Ability to work successfully in a collaborative, team-oriented organization.
  • Clear desire to embrace and align with Mary's Place's mission of empowering homeless women, children, and families to reclaim their lives.
  • Highly motivated, resourceful, and flexible; possessing a positive attitude and sense of humor, even under pressure.
  • Able to proficiently speak, read, write, and understand English.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Regularly required to talk and hear, and to converse with and listen to people in many different settings.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, type, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to occasionally push, pull, lift, and/or carry supplies up to 25 pounds.
  • Work takes place in a social services environment where extended periods of sitting, working on a computer, walking to various work areas, going up and downstairs, and standing are required.
  • Travel to program sites and meetings outside the office and around the county may be necessary.
  • Ability to work in an environment where there may be animals present, including dogs.

In compliance with the ADA Amendment Act, should you have a disability that requires assistance and/or reasonable accommodation with the job application process, please contact the Human Resources department.
