Job description

Job Summary

Ensures that the Parish Accounting Services (PAS) department provides appropriate, accurate, and timely accounting to the Archdiocese of Detroit’s parishes and schools. Oversees all PAS staff and supports training and development resources.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Interview and hire Parish Accounting Services (PAS) staff.
  • Provide training and development for PAS staff.
  • Provide performance management and guidance to PAS staff.
  • Visit parishes/schools to build relationships and provide excellent customer service to clients.
  • Assist PAS staff with complex accounting issues at parishes/schools.
  • Collaborate with other Archdiocese of Detroit departments regarding financial and administrative issues as necessary.
  • Develop and update procedures for parishes and/or schools with direction and approval from the Associate Director of Parish Financial Services.
  • Backfill and complete Parish accounting work as necessary.
  • Review and audit work output of department

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Parish Accounting Services Accountants, Parish Accounting Services Assistant Manager, Parish Accounting Services Accounts Receivable Clerk, and Parish Accounting Services Accounts Payable Clerk.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong MS Office Suite (especially Excel) and financial/accounting software skills.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects at the same time.
  • Strong financial analysis, organizational, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent experience or education
  • Minimum 5 years’ accounting experience required.
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years’ supervisory experience
  • Professional experience within a Catholic parish, school, university, archdiocese/diocese or other not-for-profit environment a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged sitting and working at a desk with repetitive motion working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
  • May involve some standing, bending, and walking.

Travel Required

  • Must have the ability to travel throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit to parishes and schools as necessary.

  • Must maintain strict confidentiality regarding any archdiocesan information gained within the Archdiocese of Detroit especially highly sensitive material such as protected Personally Identifiable Information and financial information.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
