Job description

Title: Paralegal
Employment Type: Temporary (12-Months), Full-Time Hours
Location: Oakland, CA 
Salary Range: $85,000 - $105,000 Annually


Position Summary

A government legal agency is actively seeking an experienced Paralegal for a one-year assignment. This is a fully onsite position based in Oakland. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting defense litigation, including managing discovery, preparing legal documents, organizing case files, and assisting attorneys throughout the litigation process. Prior experience handling defensive cases and all phases of discovery is highly preferred.


Qualifications:

  • 3–4 years of paralegal experience supporting defense litigation matters
  • Ability to work onsite at the Oakland office
  • Experience drafting and responding to discovery requests
  • Experience managing defense cases throughout the litigation process (preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree or completion of an American Bar Association (ABA)-approved paralegal certificate program


Responsibilities:

  • Draft and prepare legal documents, including administrative, pre-trial/trial documents, pleadings, motions, correspondence, memoranda, pleadings, motions, and discovery documents.
  • Gather, organize, summarize and analyze materials obtained through the pre-trial/project-oriented process.
  • Provide paralegal and strategic support to attorneys during the hearing, pre-trial, trial and post-trial process.
  • Maintain a master calendar of critical dates, including court appearances, court filings, pre-trial dates, and discovery response dates.
  • Gather and organize documents for administrative proceedings.
  • Act as liaison between attorneys, clients, witnesses, employees and the public. Provide logistical support, including filing legal documents or collecting legal documents at a variety of
    venues.
  • Research specific questions of law for precedents, related case law, and/or citations and summarize the results in memoranda or reports.
  • Analyze or distinguish cases that may have relevance, and present oral and/or written conclusions to litigation/advisory attorney.
  • Prepare witnesses to give testimony.
  • Assist with administrative hearings and Small Claims Court; negotiate settlements of administrative matters and small claims actions within prescribed limits.
  • Assist with public records requests and other inquiries from the public.
  • Monitor progress of cases and projects as appropriate.
  • Handle sensitive and stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintain strong active knowledge of Applicable Codes of Civil Procedure and rules of evidence; related municipal, state and federal codes; and the City Charter
