PARKS AND RECREATION
PART TIME MAINTENANCE WORKER
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs responsible semiskilled work in a variety of parks, landscape and utilities construction, maintenance and repair projects; occasionally operates non-specialized equipment in connection with manual tasks; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Performing a variety of unskilled and semiskilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of public facilities, buildings, grounds and related facilities.

  • Prepares athletic fields.
  • Mows grass, trims shrubs and bushes; operates weed eater.
  • Seeds, fertilizes and aerates fields; plants grass, trees and flowers.
  • Picks up paper and debris on public property and streets and in park areas.
  • Performs other park maintenance duties; paints County buildings and facilities.
  • Operates dump truck, mowers, chain saws, pumps, mixers, trimmers, tractors and similar equipment.
  • Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt and playground equipment.
  • Assists with equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Performs custodial, building and grounds maintenance work.
  • Plants trees, shrubs and vegetation.
  • Assists with snow removal.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Some knowledge of buildings, grounds, parks, landscape areas, ball fields and related construction, maintenance and repair procedures; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
