What is a paid tutor?

Paid tutors are individuals who offer academic guidance and instruction to students in exchange for compensation. They may work independently, for tutoring companies, or through online platforms, helping learners improve their understanding of specific subjects and develop study skills. Paid tutors can assist with homework, test preparation, and mastering challenging topics, often tailoring their teaching methods to suit each student's unique needs. Their services are available for a wide range of subjects and educational levels, from elementary school to college and beyond.

How does a paid tutor typically structure sessions to accommodate different learning styles among students?

Paid tutors often tailor their session structure based on each student's unique learning style, such as visual, auditory, or kinesthetic preferences. This may involve incorporating multimedia resources, interactive exercises, or real-world examples to ensure concepts are clearly understood. Tutors usually start with a brief assessment to gauge the student's strengths and areas for improvement, then adjust lesson plans and pacing accordingly. Regular feedback and open communication with both students and, if applicable, their parents or guardians are key to ensuring ongoing progress and engagement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paid tutor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Paid Tutor, you need subject matter expertise, a solid educational background, and often a relevant degree or teaching certification. Familiarity with digital learning platforms, online communication tools, and educational software is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly help tutors connect with and motivate students. These skills ensure effective knowledge transfer, positive student outcomes, and client satisfaction in both in-person and remote tutoring settings.

K-12 Tutor - Reading, Math, Test Prep & Executive Functioning | Marin County

Tutor Doctor

San Rafael, CA • On-site

$40 - $50/hr

Full-time

Posted 15 days ago

Job description

Important - please read before applying: We cannot guarantee a set number of hours or a block of hours. Tutors need to live in Marin County and be comfortable traveling to different parts of the county (from Tiburon up to Novato) for student sessions. If a significant commute isn't workable for you, this role likely isn't a fit.
If you're an experienced educator looking for consistent, well-paying tutoring work without the burden of finding your own clients or managing billing, Tutor Doctor invites you to apply. We match highly qualified tutors with K-12 students across reading, math, executive functioning, and test prep.
  • Work with students in reading, math, executive functioning skills, or test prep, spanning grades K-12
  • Read and interpret student assessment results (cognitive and academic) to identify specific gaps and inform instruction
  • Apply targeted strategies based on those findings - addressing both areas of weakness and existing strengths, not just following a set curriculum
  • Align instruction with school curriculum while tailoring to each student's individual needs
  • Track progress and communicate consistently with families and our team

Special education teachers strongly encouraged to apply - your background in individualized instruction and working with diverse learning profiles is exactly what many of our students need.
We handle all client matching, scheduling, and billing - you focus on teaching, and you always have the flexibility to say yes or no to any match offered.
About Tutor Doctor: We are a locally owned and operated service serving families throughout Marin County. Every tutor match is personally overseen by our owner - a credentialed educator with 20+ years in Bay Area schools. We take our tutors seriously, because when tutors thrive, students do too.
Requirements
  • Experience: 3+ years of professional teaching or tutoring experience
  • Education: Bachelor's degree required
  • Preferred: Teaching credential, special education credential, or advanced degree (Master's/PhD)
  • Ability to read and act on formal student assessment data

  • Benefits
  • $40-50/hr depending on grade level - among the highest tutor pay rates in Marin County
  • Flexible scheduling - your availability drives the match
  • We handle client matching, scheduling, and billing - you just teach
  • Paid onboarding and ongoing professional support
  • In-person tutoring across Marin County
  • Personally managed by a credentialed educator who knows the local school landscape
