How much do paid tutor jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for paid tutor in the United States is $36.22, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $28.61 and $48.08 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are paid tutors?

Paid tutors are individuals who offer academic guidance and instruction to students in exchange for compensation. They may work independently, for tutoring companies, or through online platforms, helping learners improve their understanding of specific subjects and develop study skills. Paid tutors can assist with homework, test preparation, and mastering challenging topics, often tailoring their teaching methods to suit each student's unique needs. Their services are available for a wide range of subjects and educational levels, from elementary school to college and beyond.

What is the difference between Paid Tutor vs Private Tutor?

AspectPaid TutorPrivate Tutor
CredentialsTypically requires teaching credentials or subject expertiseMay or may not require formal credentials, often based on experience
Work EnvironmentOften employed by tutoring centers, schools, or online platformsUsually works independently or locally with students
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly hired through agencies, schools, or online servicesHired directly by students or parents, often privately
Search & Comparison IntentPeople compare paid tutoring services with private tutoring optionsOften searched when seeking personalized, one-on-one instruction

In summary, a Paid Tutor is typically employed by organizations or platforms and may require formal credentials, whereas a Private Tutor usually works independently, often without formal certification. Both roles focus on providing personalized education but differ mainly in employment setting and credential requirements.

How does a paid tutor typically structure sessions to accommodate different learning styles among students?

Paid tutors often tailor their session structure based on each student's unique learning style, such as visual, auditory, or kinesthetic preferences. This may involve incorporating multimedia resources, interactive exercises, or real-world examples to ensure concepts are clearly understood. Tutors usually start with a brief assessment to gauge the student's strengths and areas for improvement, then adjust lesson plans and pacing accordingly. Regular feedback and open communication with both students and, if applicable, their parents or guardians are key to ensuring ongoing progress and engagement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Paid Tutor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Paid Tutor, you need subject matter expertise, a solid educational background, and often a relevant degree or teaching certification. Familiarity with digital learning platforms, online communication tools, and educational software is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly help tutors connect with and motivate students. These skills ensure effective knowledge transfer, positive student outcomes, and client satisfaction in both in-person and remote tutoring settings.

Job description

$32.50-$40/hr for tutoring, with paid training and paid administrative time

Join a professional 1-on-1 tutoring team

AJ Tutoring is looking for bright, energetic, and highly reliable math tutors to join our professional 1-on-1 tutoring team in the Bay Area.

This is a great role for someone who loves teaching, enjoys working closely with students and families, and wants to be part of a thoughtful education team. Our tutors teach their subjects with care, build trust with students and parents, and pay attention to the bigger picture of what each student needs to feel supported and successful over time.

Since 2005, AJ Tutoring has grown almost entirely through word of mouth because families trust the relationships our tutors build and the support our team provides. Tutors bring their subject expertise, warmth, and professionalism; AJ provides training, mentorship, materials, offices, and systems to help that work go well.

Schedule and commitment

AJ offers flexibility, but it is important to understand what flexibility means in this role.

Tutors do not work fixed shifts. Tutoring happens when students and tutors schedule sessions together, and most tutoring takes place:

  • Weekdays from about 3:00-9:30 PM
  • Weekends from about 10:00 AM-8:00 PM

Tutors should be prepared to commit to an average of at least 15 tutoring hours per week, plus paid administrative work. Because student schedules vary and the school year has natural ebbs and flows, tutors typically need at least 20 hours of availability during peak tutoring times. While we target 15 tutoring hours as our minimum commitment, many tutors work with students for 20-30 hours per week.

We take pride in supporting students consistently throughout the school year, so we are looking for tutors who can stay with AJ through the end of the 2026-27 academic year.

What the role looks like over timeIn your first few weeks

You will be learning the AJ way of tutoring and getting started with your first students. This includes paid onboarding, subject-specific training, regular check-ins with your Team Leader, and support as you learn our systems for scheduling, parent communication, and session notes.

New tutors usually begin with one to three core subjects, depending on their background and student demand. Our Client Services team helps match students with tutors, and your Team Leader helps you build confidence as you get started.

In your first six weeks

You will begin building a consistent tutoring schedule and taking more ownership over your student relationships. This includes growing toward your target tutoring hours, communicating professionally with parents, keeping student records up to date, and continuing to build fluency with local school courses and common test prep needs.

Tutoring is not scheduled in fixed shifts. Instead, tutors coordinate directly with families, and sessions happen when students are available outside of their school schedules. For most students, that means weekday afternoons/evenings and weekends, though some students have availability at other times.

Over the school year

You will be managing a tutoring practice within a larger team. This means supporting your students not just week to week, but across the natural rhythm of the school year: back-to-school planning, midterms and finals, SAT and ACT planning, AP season, course changes, summer planning, and other academic transitions.

A key part of the role is being attentive to student needs. If a student mentions an upcoming ACT, a challenging AP class, a college counseling question, or a need outside your subject area, we expect tutors to help connect that family with the right support at AJ.

What successful tutors do

Strong AJ tutors are passionate about education and student growth. They are reliable, organized, responsive, and able to communicate clearly with students, parents, and colleagues. They prepare efficiently, receive coaching well, and take ownership of the student relationships they are building.

This role is a strong fit for someone who enjoys teaching but also understands that great tutoring includes communication, follow-through, and collaboration with a broader team.

What AJ provides

We offer:

  • Strong hourly tutoring wages
  • Paid administrative time for work such as parent communication, meetings, training, and session notes
  • Paid onboarding and subject-specific training
  • Ongoing support from Team Leaders, mentors, subject departments, and fellow tutors
  • Curriculum guidance, practice materials, and local school knowledge
  • Centrally located offices, so tutors are not driving to students' homes
  • Merit-based pay increases
  • Potential eligibility for benefits
  • A warm, professional team environment
Requirements

Tutors must:

  • Have a four-year college degree
  • Be able to master either the SAT/ACT or an academic subject at the high school AP level
  • Tutor during after-school hours, including afternoons, evenings, and at least one weekend day
  • Be comfortable communicating directly with families in a professional and supportive way
  • Commit to working with AJ through the end of the academic year
Our offices

Tutoring takes place in our offices throughout the Bay Area, including:

  • 430 Cambridge Ave #110, Palo Alto, CA 94306
  • 301 S San Antonio Rd, Los Altos, CA 94022
  • 1000 Fremont Ave., Suite #130, Los Altos, CA 94024
  • 1174 Castro St #275, Mountain View, CA 94040
About AJ Tutoring

AJ Tutoring is a professional 1-on-1 tutoring company serving students across the Bay Area. We support students in academic subjects, test prep, executive functioning, AP courses, college counseling, and more.

Many of our tutors have backgrounds in education, but successful tutors also come from coaching, mentoring, camp counseling, youth leadership, performing arts, customer service, and other fields that require strong communication and relationship-building skills.

If you are excited to teach, build relationships with students and families, communicate thoughtfully, and grow as part of a professional education team, we would love to meet you.
