What is a paid relocation system administrator?

A Paid Relocation System Administrator is an IT professional responsible for managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting computer systems, servers, and networks for an organization, with the added benefit that the employer covers the costs of relocating to a new location for the job. This role typically involves installing hardware and software, monitoring system performance, ensuring network security, and providing technical support to users. Paid relocation packages help attract candidates from different regions by assisting with moving expenses and sometimes temporary housing. System administrators are crucial for ensuring the smooth operation and security of an organization's IT infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paid relocation system administrator?

To thrive as a Paid Relocation System Administrator, you need a strong background in IT systems administration, network management, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Excellent problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and manage system transitions smoothly. These skills are crucial to ensure seamless system operations and minimal downtime during relocations or infrastructure changes.

Position Announcement

Utah Tech University's Information Technology Services department is looking to fill a systems administrator position instrumental to the smooth operation of our IT services, identity and access management, and compute, storage, and application infrastructure. We need someone who thinks in terms of solutions, resilience, and security, and who's comfortable across both traditional infrastructure and modern platforms like Kubernetes. We maintain and support the systems that keep campus running day to day, and we design the resilient, scalable solutions that keep pace as the University grows. Additional information about the Information Technology Services department is available at https://it.utahtech.edu/.

Responsibilities
  • Identity and Access Management - Administer the full account lifecycle across Active Directory and Entra ID, including provisioning, deprovisioning, group and role management, and SSO/federation for campus applications.
  • Collaboration and Messaging Systems - Administer Exchange, Microsoft 365, and related collaboration services campus-wide, including mail flow, mailbox management, and licensing.
  • Modern Infrastructure Platforms - Build out and maintain our Kubernetes environment (Rancher, GitLab, CI/CD, Helm, Longhorn), providing application and development services to campus.
  • Security and Resilience - Assess risk, implement risk-reducing security measures, and maintain backups and disaster recovery plans for mission-critical systems, including patch management across Microsoft, Linux, and Proxmox.
  • Technical Leadership - Provide high-level support to IT technicians and staff across campus, and recommend technology-based solutions to campus departments.
  • Core Infrastructure - Maintain virtualization, load balancing, and server infrastructure - including web, file, database, and application servers - along with enterprise SAN storage.
  • Data Center Operations - Maintain data center infrastructure, including racks, PDUs, KVMs, and other equipment, and keep hardware and software documented and inventoried.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Systems Administration, or related field preferred. A combination of college coursework and work experience equivalent to four years will also be considered.
  • Two years of related work experience desired. The total qualifications required are based on a combination of education and work experience. Any experience used to meet the education requirement cannot also be used to meet the work experience requirement.
  • Identity & Access Management experience. Hands-on experience administering the Active Directory/Entra ID account lifecycle, including provisioning, deprovisioning, group and role management, and SSO/federation protocols (SAML/OIDC).
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to solve complex hardware, software, and network problems, required.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Linux, macOS, Proxmox, and Windows operating systems and other Microsoft server technologies.
  • Ability to research, configure, and implement open-source solutions preferred.
  • Experience configuring and maintaining MySQL, Microsoft SQL, and PostgreSQL databases and supporting applications preferred.
  • Ability to use one or more programming or scripting tools, such as PowerShell, Python, C++, JavaScript, PHP, etc., preferred.
  • Ability to operate and maintain Tomcat, WordPress, and IIS web servers, with experience obtaining SSL certificates preferred.
  • Knowledge of data center infrastructure, including racks, PDUs, cabling, cooling, power, storage, and physical servers, preferred.
  • Experience with cloud technologies such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, or Google Cloud preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technology to non-technical individuals.
