Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The College of Health and Sciences is where cultural and intellectual diversity meet. With over 35 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate programs, the college has a culture of collaboration that encourages students to discover their own path. The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences prepares students to be competitive in a global biomedical science career market. The department is committed to providing intensive instruction and training in the life sciences, by offering relevant and up-to-date courses and experiences to adequately prepare students for a variety of careers in education, government, private industry, and the health professions. Through activity and experience within the classroom, laboratory and community service, students will acquire and learn to apply their problem-solving skills, technology-based training, and scientific concepts, to appreciate and improve the quality of life. The students will be trained to assume leadership roles in local, state, national and globally diverse communities. Finally, faculty in the Department provide meaningful research experiences for undergraduate and graduate students to advance biomedical sciences as well as training in research design and implementation.
The department offers two undergraduate degrees, a B.S. in Biology and B.S. in Biomedical Sciences. The department offers graduate student training via a M.S. in Biological and Biomedical Sciences as well as participates in training of doctoral students in our Integrated Biosciences program.
Primary Purpose of Position
The ideal candidate will serve as a senior faculty member with expectations of teaching, research, and service. A senior candidate with experience in management of academic units will additionally be considered for the position of department chair. In collaboration with the faculty, the Chair will establish the overall vision for the department in regard to teaching, research, and the general development of students, faculty, and staff. The Chair serves as mentor to faculty colleagues as well as shapes the department by managing and evaluating faculty and staff. In addition to their role in faculty development, the chair acts as a collaborator with other college administrative officers, interprets college policy, advocates for his or her department from a perspective of the best overall interests of the College, leads faculty in important processes that shape the curriculum and the learning of students, and effectively articulates department and college missions to internal and external constituencies.
The Chair is expected to seek the advice of departmental faculty colleagues systematically, provide for the conduct of departmental affairs in an orderly manner through department meetings and the appointment of appropriate committees, and keep department members informed of their actions in a timely fashion. The Chair is also expected to seek student feedback on matters of concern to those enrolled in the department's programs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills and evidence of a commitment to shared governance. This individual should exhibit the ability to create an engaging teaching, learning, and research environment that promotes creativity, innovation, and the discovery of new knowledge. Candidates must display a commitment to student success that includes the recruitment, retention, graduation, and placement of undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to an open and collegial style of communication and management. Candidates must exhibit a stern commitment to North Carolina Central University and the College of Health and Sciences' mission to provide a quality education to a diverse student body.
