What does a packer do?

A packer is responsible for preparing products for shipment by placing items into containers, wrapping and sealing packages, and labeling them accurately. They check goods for damage, verify quantities, and ensure that packaging meets company and shipping standards. Packers often work in warehouses, manufacturing plants, or distribution centers, and play a key role in ensuring products reach customers in good condition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a packer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Packer, you need strong attention to detail, basic math skills, and the ability to follow instructions, usually with a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience with warehouse management systems, barcode scanners, and packaging machinery is often required. Reliability, time management, and teamwork are important soft skills that help maintain productivity and accuracy. These skills ensure that products are packaged correctly, orders are fulfilled efficiently, and overall warehouse operations run smoothly.

What are some common challenges packers face during busy seasons, and how can they manage them effectively?

During peak seasons, such as holidays or major sales events, packers often experience increased workloads and tighter deadlines. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure. Many employers provide additional training and support, and teamwork becomes especially important to ensure that orders are fulfilled accurately and on time. Staying proactive, communicating clearly with supervisors, and taking short breaks when possible can help packers maintain productivity and reduce stress during these busy periods.

Job description

Seasonal Warehouse Packer

DFTBA is an e-commerce enterprise that seeks to make a positive difference in our world. Our company is grounded in the online space and collaborating with creators to craft, sell and deliver high-quality products for their communities and supporters. As we have grown, so has our ability to do good- we have proudly donated more than $13M since 2021 to Partners in Health to support their efforts to build the Maternal Center for Excellence in Sierra Leone. And we are continuing to grow, motivated, not by personal gain, but by our potential to do more good. We at DFTBA value creativity, problem-solving and, most of all, people. We are dedicated to attracting and investing in a diverse staff and welcome all experiences, perspectives and values that make you uniquely you.

About the role

Seasonal Warehouse Packers play a key role in keeping our customers happy: ensuring their orders arrive accurately and on time. Seasonal Warehouse Packers work closely with our year-round Warehouse Packers to collaborate on picking and packing, all while maintaining a high level of quality and care. This is a hands-on position in a fast-paced warehouse environment that requires attention to detail, teamwork, and a commitment to meeting deadlines. If you're reliable, enjoy working on your feet, and take pride in getting things done, please read on! This is a full-time, seasonal position during our busiest season: mid-Sept through mid-December. Core business hours are from approximately 8am-4pm, Monday-Friday, but hours may vary depending on business levels.

The ideal start date is Monday, September 28. The position is expected to continue until December 18, 2026, but the end date is variable.

What you'll do

We do our best to mix things up, but this job does include some repetitive motion. Employees should be able to lift up to 40 pounds from time to time, walk, stand, bend, and reach over head. Applicants should be comfortable handling scented products (i.e. coffee, soap, candles, cleaning products).

As a Warehouse Packer in a fast-paced environment, you can expect to:

  1. Accurately pick products from storage locations, ensuring the correct quantity and items are selected.
  2. Collaborate with the Fulfillment and Inventory teams to ensure orders are properly packaged and ready for shipment.
  3. Assist in quality control and inventory management, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Understand that most issues can be fixed by proactive communication;
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs, stand, bend and reach over head;
  • Warehouse experience isn't required but is a plus;
  • Want to work for a company that makes a difference in the world!
