Job Summary

The Packaging Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily packaging operations, personnel, and processes to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant production. This role provides direct supervision to packaging employees, supports the achievement of production goals, maintains cGMP and food safety standards, and drives operational efficiency through KPI tracking and team leadership. The Packaging Supervisor serves as a hands-on leader who promotes a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTeam Leadership & Employee Development
  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of packaging personnel.
  • Assign work, monitor performance, and ensure employees understand their responsibilities and production expectations.
  • Train employees on the setup, operation, troubleshooting, and breakdown of packaging equipment and workstations.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and support to team members to improve productivity, quality, and compliance.
  • Track individual employee performance and provide timely feedback regarding productivity and efficiency expectations.
  • Conduct performance discussions and escalate ongoing performance concerns to the Packaging Manager and Operations Manager as needed.
  • Promote teamwork, employee engagement, and a positive work environment.
Performance Management & KPI Tracking
  • Monitor and report Packaging Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including:
    • Output per minute, hour, and shift
    • Machine efficiency and throughput
    • Individual employee productivity
    • Downtime and production losses
    • Labor efficiency
  • Complete and maintain Packaging KPI Tracker reports to document daily production, efficiency, downtime, and labor performance.
  • Notify employees when performance falls below established standards and provide coaching to improve results.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts to increase productivity and reduce waste.
Production Operations
  • Manage employee attendance, punctuality, breaks, and meal periods to maximize operational efficiency and minimize downtime.
  • Ensure packaging lines are properly staffed and operating efficiently throughout the shift.
  • Monitor packaging operations to ensure production schedules and customer requirements are met.
  • Coordinate the staging of packaging materials and components for upcoming production runs.
  • Identify and address operational issues that may impact productivity, quality, or safety.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
  • Oversee required in-process quality checks and verifications, including:
    • Heat seal verification
    • Gummy count verification
    • Label verification
    • Packaging component verification
    • Other quality and compliance checks as required
  • Ensure all quality checks and production records are completed accurately and timely.
  • Maintain strict line clearance and label control procedures to prevent product mix-ups and packaging errors.
  • Ensure compliance with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), FDA regulations, food safety requirements, company policies, and customer specifications.
  • Support sanitation activities and A-Cleans to eliminate cross-contamination risks.
  • Promote a culture of quality, food safety, and compliance within the packaging department.
Equipment & Maintenance
  • Ensure packaging equipment is operated safely and efficiently.
  • Verify daily preventive maintenance activities are completed as scheduled.
  • Communicate equipment issues and maintenance needs promptly to the Maintenance Department.
  • Assist in troubleshooting equipment performance issues and reducing downtime.
Documentation & Systems Management
  • Complete production startup checklists, cleaning logs, equipment use logs, and other required documentation accurately.
  • Assist with completing and closing packaging work orders within NetSuite, ensuring accuracy of:
    • Production quantities
    • Lot numbers
    • Expiration dates
    • Packaging material consumption
  • Complete Shift Changeover Checklists and communicate production status, quality concerns, equipment issues, and process improvements to incoming shifts.
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Inventory & Product Release
  • Verify product has been released by Quality following Water Activity testing before packaging.
  • Ensure released product is properly staged and available for packaging operations.
  • Coordinate with Warehouse, Production, and Quality teams to ensure materials and products are available when needed.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory accuracy and proper material control practices.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing, food production, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, or packaging environment preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of cGMP regulations, FDA requirements, food safety standards, and quality systems.
  • Experience tracking production metrics and employee performance.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as NetSuite preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures, noise levels, and production schedules.
