The Sr. Manager, Packaging Development will play a key role in driving packaging development across multiple brands reporting to the Director of Package Development. The developer will be part of the team leading the packaging efforts to ensure all the technical and aesthetic aspects from design turnover through production are delivered with excellence.
 
The team includes several members In NYC, our China new product development team, Global Sourcing, planning, R&D, product marketing and creative. The Sr. Manager, Packaging Development will work collaboratively with all teams
 
Our team in China (including packaging engineers) produces most of our products and manages our strategic suppliers in Asia. The individual will be required to help drive projects and solicit other team members to ensure the required packaging tasks are performed successfully and in a timely manner. The developer must have the ability to adapt to fast-changing environments and should be a creative problem solver, able to consider new approaches to improve the organization's competitive position.
 
Responsibilities
  • Partner with key team members to continually execute innovative execution for the category and brand.
  • Provide expertise and ensure organizational capability in packaging development and process engineering to ensure successful development and launch of both new packaging/products and dual sourcing for current business
  • Ensures KPIs align with brand/category and have the foresight to anticipate when changes are required
  • Partner with creative teams and the team China to drive new and breakthrough premium packaging materials, color effects and decoration. 
  • Ensure all projects are completed and meet the intended design, quality, cost, functionality, manufacturability, regulatory, consumer safety and sustainability objectives.
  • Support the company efforts on social and environmental responsibility, specifically through driving sustainable design and materials for our packaging.
  • Build strong relationship across functional teams to develop, implement and align with the e.l.f.’ s strategy with long term vision. 
  • Understand that the first consumer experience is the package. Represent the culture and DNA of the brand or business segment being managed
  • Provide updates of project milestones, inform appropriate people of technical and timing issues and call out any red flags on a timely basis.
  • Provide technical solutions and work with the cross functional team on timeline target, cost avoidance, and quality improvement
  • Develop risk assessments and timetables when needed
  • Evaluate package sample, sustainability prototypes and supplier technical capability.
  • Communicate effectively with packaging suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure all specifications are adhered to.
Qualifications
  • BS degree in Packaging Science or Engineering.
  • IOPP certification a plus
  • Fluency in Mandarin a plus
  • 7+ years’ experience in cosmetic package development.
  • Concentrated experience in beauty industry with proven development experience in color, fragrance, skin care categories and tools.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of global supplier community and understanding of pricing structures.
  • Demonstrated understanding of manufacturing and distribution process as it relates to supporting targeted and global product launch strategies.
  • Deep/practical packaging expertise in sustainability and abreast of best practices and emerging opportunities/technologies that support sustainability objectives
  • Experience working with Global suppliers across multiple time zones
  • Able to create package specification, fill and assemblies, and control plan.
  • Provide updates of project milestones, inform appropriate people of technical and timing issues.
  • Audit testing to qualify new packages.
  • Ensure all projects are completed and meet the intended design, quality, cost, functionality, manufacturability, regulatory, consumer safety and sustainability objectives.
  • Provide technical solutions and work with the cross functional team on timeline target, cost avoidance, and quality improvement
  • Maintain technical contact with suppliers.
  • Research and identify suppliers who have capabilities in sustainable packaging.
  • Develop risk assessments and timetables.
  • Evaluate package samples, sustainability prototypes and supplier technical capability.
Technical Competency
  • Technical competency in analysis of geometric objects in 2- and 3-dimensions including understanding of form, fit, and function of packaging components and subcomponents.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of materials used in the construction and manufacturing of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of decorating techniques and materials used on primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of test methods used to validate component/package performance.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable packaging and supplier practices, including knowledge of post-consumer recycled materials, recyclability, etc.
  • PC literate and competent with Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel and Pivot table functionalities). 
  • Some level of judgment required in assessing Marketing briefs, clarity of Packaging definition and providing recommendations to lower risks while achieving the Marketing concept
  • Knowledge of CAD software and/or PRO E Creo and 3D printing
  • Some degree of analytical, financial and organization skills required 
The base salary range for this role is listed above. 
 
Total compensation includes base salary, annual company-based performance bonus, and equity. Under e.l.f.’s annual bonus program, employees are eligible to earn up to 200% of their target bonus when company performance exceeds defined goals. In addition, e.l.f. provides a variety of other benefits to employees, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a retirement savings plan, gender neutral parental leave, and unlimited paid time off. The amount of total compensation (including base salary) offered will be based on a wide range of factors, including geographic location, experience, specific skills, and qualifications.
