What is overseas production?

Overseas production refers to the process of manufacturing goods in a foreign country, often to take advantage of lower labor costs, specialized skills, or proximity to raw materials. Companies may choose overseas production to increase profitability, improve efficiency, or access new markets. This approach can involve working directly with foreign factories, using third-party manufacturers, or setting up their own facilities abroad. Managing overseas production requires careful attention to quality control, logistics, legal compliance, and cultural differences.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in overseas production roles, and how can they be effectively managed?

Professionals in Overseas Production frequently encounter challenges such as coordinating across time zones, managing language and cultural differences, and ensuring consistent quality standards across international suppliers or manufacturers. Effective communication, clear documentation, and regular virtual meetings can help overcome these obstacles. Building strong relationships with overseas partners and staying adaptable to changing regulations or logistics are also crucial for a smooth production process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overseas production manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overseas Production Manager, you need expertise in supply chain management, production planning, and international business practices, typically supported by a relevant degree and experience in manufacturing or logistics. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, quality control standards, and import/export regulations is crucial. Strong negotiation, cross-cultural communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage international teams and resolve challenges efficiently. These skills ensure timely, cost-effective, and high-quality production while maintaining productive relationships with suppliers and stakeholders worldwide.

Job description

Position Overview:
As the Production and Supply Chain Manager at Teton Outfitters, you will lead the demand and supply planning, global sourcing, production, compliance, and quality functions that support hard- and soft-line products manufactured across international markets. You will establish a structured sales and operations planning (S&OP) process, strengthen supplier performance, and use data to align inventory and production with business demand. You will lead a small team that includes on-site, remote, and international employees and contractors, and partner with Product, Development, Finance, Logistics, Distribution, and Sales. This role offers a compelling opportunity to build effective supply chain processes, improve product availability, and shape the structure and capabilities of a developing team.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and lead the S&OP process, aligning demand forecasts, supply plans, production capacity, inventory strategies, and business priorities.
  • Create and execute global sourcing and production strategies that improve supplier performance, product availability, cost competitiveness, lead times, and production capacity.
  • Lead and develop a team of on-site, remote, and international employees and contractors across supply planning, sourcing, production, quality, and compliance.
  • Analyze supply, demand, inventory, spend, pricing, and operational data using NetSuite, business intelligence tools, and performance dashboards to guide decisions and establish appropriate safety stock levels to deliver service improvements.
  • Establish supplier performance metrics and scorecards, hold vendors accountable for service and quality expectations, and address delivery, capacity, and production risks.
  • Negotiate supplier pricing, lead times, delivery terms, contracts, and service expectations while maintaining product quality and supply continuity.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of quality management processes, documentation, training, reporting, and vendor social compliance programs.
  • Evaluate product specifications, material tolerances, quality data, and customer feedback to identify trends, resolve issues, and improve finished-product quality.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Finance, Logistics, Distribution, and Sales to improve planning, product development, process flows, and operational performance.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Lean methods, root cause analysis, Kaizen events, process documentation, and key performance indicators.
  • Actively participate and prepare the organization for an SAP ERP transition in a few years.

Desired Competencies:
  • Leadership: You inspire, guide, and empower others to achieve their best by setting clear direction, fostering trust, and creating an environment where people feel supported, motivated, and accountable for delivering results.
  • Data & Analytical Literacy: You interpret data, metrics, or reporting to inform decisions, identify trends, and measure outcomes relevant to your role.
  • Planning & Organization: You manage time, resources, and priorities effectively to meet deadlines and deliver consistent results.
  • Decision Making: You are able to make informed and calculated decisions using qualitative and quantitative insights, but at times operating with some ambiguity

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of supply chain experience in the apparel or consumer products industry, including exposure to overseas contract manufacturing.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience building, leading, and developing teams.
  • Demonstrated experience leading the SIOP process to balance demand forecasts, inventory investments, and supply capabilities to support service, revenue, and profitability targets.
  • Experience managing global sourcing, overseas production, supplier relationships, and contract manufacturing operations.
  • Strong understanding of quality assurance and quality control principles and their application within a supplier or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience analyzing supply chain and inventory data using enterprise systems and business intelligence tools; NetSuite and/or SAP experience is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate supplier costs, lead times, terms, contracts, and performance expectations.
  • Ability to travel occasionally, including internationally.
  • Ability to work full-time in Rigby, Idaho (hybrid work structure; Tues, Weds & Thurs in-office), with flexibility to address time-sensitive escalations involving international operations. Relocation assistance available to non-local candidates.
  • This position is not eligible for sponsorship.
