What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Tech, you generally need a high school diploma or equivalent, attention to detail, and basic knowledge of monitoring and reporting procedures. Familiarity with electronic monitoring systems, patient care software, or facility-specific technology is often required, and certifications like CPR or first aid may be preferred. Strong communication, reliability, and the ability to remain alert and responsive during night shifts are crucial soft skills. These skills ensure safety, accurate documentation, and smooth operations during overnight hours when resources may be limited.

What are some common challenges faced by an Overnight Tech, and how can they be managed effectively?

Overnight Techs often work independently during late hours, which can present challenges such as staying alert during quiet periods and managing unexpected technical issues without immediate on-site support. To manage these challenges, it's important to establish a consistent sleep schedule, utilize effective communication tools to stay connected with other team members, and develop a strong understanding of troubleshooting protocols. Additionally, keeping detailed logs and preparing for potential scenarios can help Overnight Techs respond efficiently to incidents and maintain smooth operations.

What are Overnight Techs?

Job description

A Little About:
Oats Overnight is on a mission to build a generational CPG brand. Since 2016, our high-protein, drinkable oatmeal has reached over a million customers through direct-to-consumer, and we're now scaling with all major nationwide retail and club partners. Our goal: become a household brand by leveraging speed, storytelling, and strategy.
We are vertically integrated: we develop, manufacture, and fulfill everything in-house. This operational control allows us to engage customers directly into the R&D process, an initiative where we were first-to-market in CPG. It also makes our brand tangible and real: our factory, our team, and our product pipeline are all part of the narrative.
This is an exciting stage - we are emerging as a significant omni-channel brand and launching new products to capture significant market share across verticals. We want you to help us get there.
Every teammate here has equity because we're building something big, and everyone plays an important role. If you're excited about building a brand that does things differently, this is that opportunity.
What's The Job
The Payroll Manager owns all things payroll at Oats Overnight. You'll be the primary processor and point of contact - for employees, HR, and Finance - on every payroll-related matter. You'll run weekly payroll in UKG Pro, ensure tax compliance, support financial audits, and partner closely with Accounting on month-end close. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role for someone who genuinely loves getting payroll right.
What You'll Be Doing, Stop Scanning and Read This Part
  • Primary processor of weekly payroll across Oats Overnight
  • Verify new hires and personnel changes, calculate overtime and bonus payments, and maintain accurate electronic records
  • Manage all garnishments and ensure timely processing and payment with internal partners
  • Validate pre- and post-payroll reporting to ensure a successful pay process; responsible for all post-payroll reporting and filing
  • Prepare and book accruals for full-time and temp labor
  • Prepare month-end close payroll analytical reporting, researching and providing answers for variance drivers
  • Own accrued payroll reconciliation - research and resolve discrepancies
  • Internal UKG champion - responsible for all business rules (4+ org levels, high-volume gross/tax/deduction codes), mapping, and reporting
  • Responsible for all payroll tax compliance (940s, 941s, W-2s) and audits
  • Support financial audit inquiries and deliverables
  • Be the go-to resource for employee payroll questions and concerns
  • Enforce SOPs with leadership across approvals, timecards, punches, and CTO
  • Make recommendations and help implement changes to methods and procedures to improve effectiveness and security
  • Other duties as assigned

What You've Done and Who You Are
  • 5+ years of hands-on payroll management experience with a mixed hourly and salaried, multi-state population
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Must have managed payroll at 500+ FTEs
  • Deep knowledge of multi-state and federal pay laws and requirements
  • Strong attention to detail with sharp investigative and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of GAAP principles, accounting, financial systems, and processes
  • UKG Pro experience required (or equivalent UKG platform experience)
  • Comfortable leveraging AI tools to strategize and problem-solve
  • Bilingual in Spanish a plus
  • Someone that can partner and influence at all different levels
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and navigate in a fast-moving environment
  • A relentless drive to get things done.
  • Flexible, willing, and quick to learn new processes, new technology, and new ways of thinking.

Why You Might Like Working Here
  • This is going to be fun.
  • Casual, friendly culture. We're serious about what we do but we don't take ourselves too seriously.
  • Every employee has equity
  • High growth potential with opportunities to expand
  • Free oatmeal. It's very good.

Why You Might Not Like Working Here
  • It's not a cushy job, the bar is high
  • We are growing quickly, and have a fast-paced work environment.

Our Core Values
  • Ownership - We are all owners. We show up with passion and accountability in everything we do. If something's broken, fix it or call it out.
  • Rational - How we decide matters. We focus on what we can control and make high-quality decisions repeatedly.
  • Iterative - We challenge the status quo and improve constantly. When data or situations change, we adapt.
  • Curiosity - We ask questions, even when it's uncomfortable. Learning and leading go hand in hand.

Physical Demands
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • You must be able to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards
  • You must be able to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards

The Perks
  • Full Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, and 401k
  • Parental Leave
  • 4 Weeks of paid time off
  • Weekly Pay
  • Stock options - every employee is an owner
  • Free, delicious oatmeal

And last but never least...
We value people who roll up their sleeves and support their fellow team members. We embrace diversity and encourage equal opportunity every chance we get, and we look forward to learning from people whose backgrounds, skills, and perspectives challenge and enrich our own.
