Job description

Established nearly two centuries ago, FM is a leading mutual insurance company whose capital, scientific research capability and engineering expertise are solely dedicated to property risk management and the resilience of its policyholder-owners. These owners, who share the belief that the majority of property loss is preventable, represent many of the world's largest organizations, including one of every four Fortune 500 companies. They work with FM to better understand the hazards that can impact their business continuity to make cost-effective risk management decisions, combining property loss prevention with insurance protection.
Overview: If you enjoy variety and solving complex engineering problems, we will put your technical, time-management and organizational skills to use evaluating mechanical, electrical and pressure equipment at large commercial and industrial client facilities. You will interact with clients across diverse industries - including power generation, data centers, healthcare, manufacturing, chemical processing, mining and more - helping them strengthen the integrity and reliability of the systems their businesses depend on. We will provide you with extensive, structured training to understand our business, build relationships with mentors, and learn FM's best-in-class engineering standards and approach to equipment risk evaluation. In this role, you will work independently, backed by nearly 200 years of engineering expertise and experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Initial assignments are structured for you to learn core B&M processes and techniques through hands-on training and mentorship. As your experience grows, responsibilities expand to include assessing equipment risks at larger, more complex commercial and industrial properties.
The role involves visiting client facilities and conducting detailed Boiler & Machinery evaluations that help clients reduce equipment breakdown risk and protect the operational resilience of their business. Work includes hands-on assessments of critical production, utility and support systems and equipment, including:
  • Electrical equipment and distribution systems - switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, batteries and power distribution
  • Boilers, pressure vessels and piping systems - integrity, reliability, code compliance and associated hazards
  • Rotating equipment - generators, gas turbines, steam turbines, compressors and auxiliary systems
  • Asset integrity programs - evaluation of inspection, testing and maintenance (ITM) strategies, including preventive, predictive and condition-based programs
  • Industrial control systems - evaluation of client resilience against cyber-related physical damage risks
  • Operator competency - assessment of training programs, operational procedures and management oversight
  • Systems approach - developing a clear understanding of the client's business by evaluating how production, utility and support systems interrelate and identifying time-element (business interruption) impacts

These evaluations support clients in protecting critical equipment, maintaining operational continuity and improving overall risk management. You will develop loss scenarios and loss expectancies that quantify equipment breakdown exposures and prepare engineering reports with practical, cost-effective loss prevention recommendations.
Consultant Engineers apply FM Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets and communicate recommendations and engineering solutions in a way that ensures client understanding and drives risk improvement. You will collaborate with Operations Engineering, Client Services, Account Management and Underwriting on Boiler & Machinery exposures and risks. Strong communication, consulting, listening and relationship-building skills are essential.
You should be willing to operate from a home office and will travel to client facilities regularly; overnight travel could be greater than 50% of the time, depending on the location of your home office. Candidates should be willing to live in the greater metro areas of southern California or Phoenix, AZ.
Based on experience, candidates will be considered for Consultant Engineer I or II.
Qualifications
Successful Consultant Engineer - B&M candidates have the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical or electrical engineering strongly preferred)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Efficient time management with the ability to work independently
  • Proven technical capability including knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment, systems and their interrelationships
  • Demonstrated understanding of or experience with industrial equipment such as boilers, pressure vessels, generators, turbines, transformers, switchgear or similar systems
  • Valid driver's license
  • Physical ability to navigate industrial environments including climbing stairs and ladders, lifting >25 lbs., standing for extended periods, and working in confined spaces or elevated areas as required by client facilities
  • Proficient in MS Office products and comfortable learning new technologies

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in power generation, manufacturing, chemical processing, mining, data centers, healthcare or similar high-hazard industries
  • Familiarity with inspection, testing and maintenance (ITM) programs, predictive maintenance technologies (e.g., infrared thermography, vibration analysis, oil analysis) or asset integrity management concepts
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME, NFPA, IEEE, NETA)
  • Knowledge of industrial control systems or operational technology (OT) environments

You will be expected to work independently and should be willing to operate from your home office and travel to client sites on a regular basis.
The final salary offer will vary based on geographic location, individual education, skills, and experience. The position is eligible to participate in FM's comprehensive Total Rewards program that includes an incentive plan, medical, dental and vision insurance, life and disability insurance, well-being programs, a 401(k) and pension plan, career development opportunities, tuition reimbursement, flexible work, and time off, including vacation and sick time.
FM is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to attracting, developing and retaining a diverse workforce.
