What are Overnight Substation Commissioning Engineers?

Overnight Substation Commissioning Engineers are specialized electrical engineers who work during nighttime hours to test, inspect, and validate the installation and functionality of electrical substations before they are put into service. Their responsibilities include performing electrical tests, troubleshooting issues, verifying protection and control systems, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards. Working overnight allows these engineers to minimize disruptions to daytime operations and meet project deadlines. This role requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely in high-voltage environments.

What is the difference between Overnight Substation Commissioning Engineer vs Substation Maintenance Technician?

AspectOvernight Substation Commissioning EngineerSubstation Maintenance Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certificationsTechnical diploma or equivalent, specialized training
Work EnvironmentFieldwork during commissioning, often overnight shiftsMaintenance and troubleshooting, regular shifts
Industry UsageInvolved in testing and starting up substationsEnsures ongoing operation and repairs

The Overnight Substation Commissioning Engineer focuses on testing and starting up substations, often working overnight during initial commissioning. In contrast, the Substation Maintenance Technician handles routine maintenance and repairs to keep substations operational. Both roles require electrical knowledge but differ in scope, timing, and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight Substation Commissioning Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Substation Commissioning Engineer, you need strong electrical engineering knowledge, hands-on experience with substation systems, and typically a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with testing equipment, SCADA systems, and industry certifications like NETA or IEEE standards is essential. Exceptional problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing complex projects and collaborating with onsite teams during overnight shifts. These skills ensure safe, accurate, and timely commissioning of substations, which is critical for reliable electrical grid operations.

What are some unique challenges faced by Overnight Substation Commissioning Engineers, and how can they be managed?

Overnight Substation Commissioning Engineers often encounter challenges such as working in low-light conditions, managing fatigue from night shifts, and ensuring safety while performing complex electrical tests. Effective time management, adherence to strict safety protocols, and clear communication with both daytime and nighttime teams are essential for success. Utilizing advanced testing equipment and scheduling regular breaks can help maintain alertness and accuracy during critical commissioning tasks.

FindTalent is hiring a highly skilled Substation Commissioning Engineer to support critical utility infrastructure projects across the U.S. This remote-based role is ideal for a technically proficient professional who can work independently while traveling full-time to high-voltage substation construction sites. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and executing the commissioning, testing, and operational verification of substation systems up to 500kV.

This role plays a key part in ensuring systems are installed correctly, operate reliably, and meet all design and compliance requirements. While the position is remote, it requires 100% travel to various project sites nationwide, with per diem, travel support, and regular paid trips home.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead substation commissioning activities for transmission and distribution projects from pre-energization through closeout.

  • Perform and supervise functional testing of protection and control systems, relays, and high-voltage equipment.

  • Validate field installations against engineering drawings and technical specifications.

  • Troubleshoot equipment and system issues, recommend solutions, and direct corrective actions on-site.

  • Develop and manage commissioning procedures, isolation plans, outage schedules, and safety protocols.

  • Collaborate closely with field crews, testing teams, and client stakeholders to ensure safe and efficient commissioning.

  • Review and approve test results and verify correct equipment operation per system design.

  • Coordinate with engineering to identify and address design conflicts or field modifications.

  • Ensure documentation is complete and accurate, including test reports, redlined drawings, and regulatory submissions.

  • Provide real-time updates to project management and maintain consistent communication with all stakeholders.

Education, Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (foreign equivalents accepted).

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in substation field commissioning, construction, or protection & control engineering.

  • Strong working knowledge of substation equipment and protection schemes, including relay logic and SCADA integration.

  • Proficiency with relay testing and communication software such as Enoserve RTS, Doble Protection Suite, SEL Compass, and AcSELerator Quickset.

  • Familiarity with NETA, IEEE, and utility specifications related to substation construction and testing.

  • Experience testing and commissioning equipment such as breakers, transformers, CTs, PTs, relays, panels, and battery systems.

  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills in field environments.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex electrical drawings and system schematics.

  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted driverโ€™s license.

  • Must pass drug screening and background checks.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

  • Willing and able to travel 100% for extended periods; per diem and scheduled paid trips home are provided.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with substation commissioning for voltage levels up to 500kV.

  • Familiarity with SEL, GE, and ABB digital relays.

  • Previous leadership in field-based substation or utility projects.

  • Working knowledge of construction sequencing and safety practices for energized environments.

Benefits & Compensation:
Our client offers a robust and competitive benefits package, including:
