What are Overnight Remote DevOps?

Overnight Remote DevOps professionals are IT specialists who manage, monitor, and maintain an organization's infrastructure and applications during overnight hours, working remotely. Their responsibilities often include responding to system alerts, deploying updates, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring system availability and performance outside regular business hours. This role is critical for organizations that require 24/7 uptime, especially those with global operations or customers in different time zones. Remote work allows these professionals to operate from anywhere, providing flexibility while ensuring essential support during nighttime hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight Remote DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Remote DevOps Engineer, you need strong skills in cloud infrastructure management, automation, scripting (such as Python or Bash), and a solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, often supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like AWS, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, and monitoring systems is typically required, as well as certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or similar. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for responding to incidents independently and collaborating across time zones. These competencies ensure reliable system uptime, fast incident resolution, and seamless operations during overnight shifts when on-site support is limited.

What are the typical challenges faced by an Overnight Remote DevOps professional, and how can they be managed?

Overnight Remote DevOps professionals often encounter challenges such as limited real-time support from colleagues, responding to critical incidents during off-peak hours, and maintaining clear communication across different time zones. To manage these, it's important to have well-documented runbooks, robust monitoring tools, and clear escalation procedures. Proactively collaborating with daytime teams through detailed handover notes and regular sync meetings also helps ensure smooth operations and quick incident resolution.

During the initial phase of the program, this individual will focus heavily on DevOps initiatives, helping mature deployment pipelines, automation capabilities, cloud infrastructure, and operational processes. As modernization efforts evolve, responsibilities will become more balanced between DevOps engineering and Java application development.

We have a strong preference for candidates located near Greenbelt, Maryland, or candidates willing to travel onsite periodically for badging and program-related activities.

This role will require the ability to obtain and maintain a government clearance.

• Support cloud and hybrid-cloud infrastructure modernization efforts

• Improve system reliability, observability, monitoring, and operational efficiency

• Develop and maintain infrastructure as code and automation frameworks

• Support application deployments, production troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives

• Design, develop, and maintain Java-based backend services and integrations

• Build and support RESTful APIs and distributed system integrations

• Collaborate with engineers, product teams, QA, DevOps, and client stakeholders in agile environments

• Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, and technical planning activities

• Contribute to software engineering and DevOps best practices across the program

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering, DevOps, platform engineering, or related experience and a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent additional experience in lieu of a degree

• Strong hands-on experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and cloud infrastructure

• Experience supporting cloud-native environments using AWS or similar cloud platforms

• Familiarity with modern DevOps and platform engineering tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or similar technologies

• Experience implementing infrastructure automation, containerization, and Infrastructure as Code practices in enterprise environments

• Experience supporting application deployment, release management, and operational excellence initiatives across software delivery teams

• 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience

• Strong experience with Spring Framework and RESTful web services

• Experience supporting enterprise applications in production environments

• Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills across application and infrastructure layers

• Experience working within agile software development teams

• Ability to obtain and maintain a government clearance

• Ability to travel onsite to a NASA location for badging and program support

• Strong preference for candidates who can work onsite in Greenbelt, MD as needed

Desired Qualifications

• Experience supporting NASA or federal civilian agencies

• Experience establishing or leading DevOps practices across engineering organizations

• Experience with AWS services commonly used in modern application and infrastructure environments

• Experience with platform engineering concepts, developer enablement, and internal developer platforms

• Experience implementing observability, monitoring, logging, and performance management solutions

• Familiarity with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Splunk, Datadog, or similar monitoring platforms

Location & Travel

• Remote role with strong preference for candidates near Greenbelt, MD

• Periodic travel required for NASA badging and onsite activities
