Medical Technologist / Clinical Laboratory Scientist:

Facility: VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS)
Location: 3801 Miranda Ave., Palo Alto, CA 94304-2201
Department: Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service
Worksite: Building 100, Laboratory โ€“ 4th Floor
Contract: 26 weeks + 4 Option Years
Start: Upon successful completion of credentialing and onboarding
 

Position Overview:

The VA Palo Alto Health Care System is seeking qualified Clinical Laboratory Scientists (Medical Technologists) to provide onsite laboratory services within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service.

The Medical Technologist will perform a broad range of automated and manual laboratory testing, evaluate specimens, operate and maintain laboratory instrumentation, perform quality control procedures, validate and report results, and support accurate and timely diagnostic testing for Veterans.

The laboratory operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

 Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform a full range of automated and manual laboratory procedures in:
    • Chemistry
    • Urinalysis
    • Hematology
    • Serology
    • Bacteriology
    • Immunohematology
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and request replacement specimens when necessary.
  • Prepare patient specimens for testing while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Select, perform, evaluate, and monitor laboratory testing procedures using manual and automated techniques.
  • Operate laboratory analyzers and recognize indicators of instrument malfunction.
  • Troubleshoot common equipment problems and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Perform calibration, standardization, adjustment, and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments.
  • Conduct quality control procedures for equipment, reagents, and laboratory products.
  • Maintain accurate quality control records and documentation.
  • Evaluate the validity and accuracy of laboratory results in accordance with established procedures.
  • Correlate laboratory data with relevant patient information, including medical history and medications, when appropriate.
  • Perform additional or confirmatory testing when abnormal or questionable results require further evaluation.
  • Recognize critical or abnormal results requiring immediate attention and report them directly to the ordering provider.
  • Enter, edit, verify, and release laboratory results in the laboratory information system.
  • Accession and receive specimens into the VA laboratory information system for in-house testing or referral to reference laboratories.
  • Maintain adequate supplies and inventory within the assigned laboratory work area.
  • Perform phlebotomy as needed to obtain patient specimens, including blood cultures and compatibility specimens.
  • Follow established laboratory protocols, VA policies, safety standards, and quality requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to testing, quality control, equipment, and patient specimens.
  • Provide services consistent with recognized professional standards and applicable VA requirements.
License and Certification:

BLS (AHA)

ASCP or AMT
