About Bank Street School for Children
A leader in progressive education for more than 100 years, the Bank Street School for Children provides students, from nursery through 8th grade, an education that engages their natural curiosity, nurtures critical thinking, and helps to develop a sense of community and social responsibility. Through a teaching approach that is fundamentally hands-on and child-centered, Bank Street students develop the courage and confidence to think independently, work collaboratively, understand themselves and others more deeply, and possess the compassion to make meaning of the world around them.
About the Position
The Bank Street School for Children is seeking an innovative Math/Science Teacher who will teach 7th grade Math and Science classes, with possible teaching responsibilities for other grades as school needs evolve. This role combines subject-area instruction with homeroom responsibilities, where serving as a co-advisor builds community and attends to the social-emotional development of students. We seek an educator with a Master's degree and at least three years of experience teaching upper elementary or middle school students. Experience with student-centered math and science curriculum and working collaboratively is essential.
Focus of 7th Grade Curriculum:
Group work, discovery-based learning, and problem solving are key components of our curricula.
  • 7th grade math is part of a two-year algebra sequence which focuses on expressions, equations, exponents, linear relationships with slope, graphing, and introductory 3D geometry. The 8th grade builds upon this foundation and completes the algebra sequence.
  • Biology is the focus of 7th grade science, which includes a study of genetics, evolution, cells and microscopes, and human reproduction and sexuality.

Key Responsibilities
Math and Science Instruction
  • Teach math and science curriculum responsive to students' developmental capacities and needs
  • Document lesson plans and develop comprehensive curriculum with guidance from supervisor and in collaboration with the math/science team
  • Differentiate instruction to support group and individual learning
  • Utilize materials-based discovery approaches and inquiry-based pedagogy
  • Incorporate technology into the classroom when applicable to enhance learning
  • Apply both standards-based assessment and progressive teaching methods

Homeroom and Student Support
  • Serve as co-advisor and homeroom teacher, organizing and maintaining a positive classroom community
  • Provide extra help to students as necessary during activity periods and morning math
  • Write student reports and present at curriculum events
  • Communicate regularly with individual families and others who support students' learning and growth

Collaboration and Professional Engagement
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to support curriculum and children's development
  • Maintain and share the math/science rooms in collaboration with the math/science team
  • Attend and engage in regular planning meetings and supervision meetings
  • Attend and participate in weekly faculty meetings
  • Engage in professional development and lifelong learning

School Community Responsibilities
  • Contribute to internal coverage within the math/science team and across the school
  • Fulfill weekly community duties as assigned, which can include lunch, recess, early morning care, and bus duty
  • Support and attend weekly assemblies
  • Support school events including dances, graduation, the school musical, promotional videos, field day, and field trips
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor and division head

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Science, Education, or a related field
  • 3+ years of teaching math and/or science at the upper elementary or middle school level
  • Experience working as part of a collaborative team of teachers
  • Background in materials-based discovery approaches to mathematics and/or science
  • Understanding of inquiry-based pedagogy and experience developing curriculum
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development and constructivist teaching
  • Ability to effectively differentiate instruction
  • Experience with anti-bias and culturally responsive pedagogy
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, and administration
  • Proficiency with incorporating technology into the classroom
  • Demonstrated classroom management skills
