The Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board is seeking a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse to join our Crisis Stabilization/23hr program team. In this role, you'll play an important part in supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges, working alongside a skilled and compassionate care team. This position is based onsite at the BJ Roberts Behavioral Health Center and offers a supportive workplace culture focused on safety, collaboration, and ethical care. Flexible scheduling helps promote a healthy balance between your professional and personal life while you contribute to meaningful, community-centered work.

Our benefits include:
Medical, dental, vision, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, generous paid leave, retirement benefits through the Virginia Retirement System, and employee discount programs.

ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION

Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided a comprehensive continuum of high-quality, essential, and community-based services to citizens of the Peninsula who are living with a mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders.

The BJ Roberts Behavioral Health Center is designed to serve individuals experiencing acute mental health crises. It offers a range of urgent care services, including therapy, medication management, suicide prevention, and crisis intervention. Unlike traditional emergency rooms, the facility emphasizes a peaceful and therapeutic atmosphere.

POSITION OVERVIEW

As an LPN in Crisis Services, you will assist the staff psychiatrist with medication-related care, including administration, monitoring, and documentation. The program operates within a 16-bed residential facility serving adults in need of short-term stabilization due to acute mental health or co-occurring substance use concerns. Each client is provided a private room in a structured, supportive setting.

Key responsibilities include conducting physical and mental health assessments, assisting with medication management (including methadone when applicable), and monitoring overall client well-being. You will also complete admissions and follow-ups, perform screenings such as drug and TB tests, and maintain accurate clinical records. Ensuring proper handling, storage, and disposal of medications is an essential part of this role, along with contributing to a safe and therapeutic environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license issued by the Virginia State Board of Nursing
  • One (1) year of experience in the administration of medication or a substance abuse treatment, psychiatric setting, or long-term care facility, including the dispensing of narcotic medication.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are important, as this role involves direct client interaction, counseling support, and teamwork. Comfort with electronic documentation systems and attention to detail are also necessary for maintaining accurate records and ensuring quality care delivery.

APPLY TODAY

If you meet the qualifications and are interested in making a difference in your community, we encourage you to submit your application online.

Note: Current H-NNCSB employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.

The selected candidate must successfully pass a criminal history fingerprint background investigation, DMV record check, Child Registry search, drug screening test and employment reference checks.
