Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals, Policies and Mission of the YMCA of the East Bay. Lead camp program activities for groups of all ages in a safe, enjoyable and positive environment for participants, members, and staff. Provide a quality experience for children, parents and guests focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Supervise and engage a group of participants in camp activities such as, but not limited to: climbing wall, zip lines, archery, pool activities, meal supervision and overnight supervision.
  2. Maintain positive relations with campers, parents, guests and other staff. Model relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  3. Model friendliness, enthusiasm and participation in all aspects of planning and program implementation. 
  4. Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  5. Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, dress code, cell phone use and emergencies. Proactively communicate with supervisor on all program operations.
  6. Assist with the development, preparation, and organization of overnight camp activities, special events and activities within the program area.
  7. Support and assist staff and volunteers in all areas of program operation and development.
  8. Responsible for the safety and supervision of participants at all times.
  9. Adhere to behavior standards and guidelines for the program.
  10. Evaluate program participant’s progress and communicates progress to supervisors, Head Leader and parents.
  11. Ensure the maintenance and upkeep of all facility and equipment related to the program.
  12. Attend all department staff meetings and trainings specified by supervisor.
  13. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings. 
  • Must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds
  • Mobility to quickly respond to emergencies
  • Ability to work extended hours around the clock including overnight

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or GED; one year or more of college preferred
  • One year of experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting
  • At least 18 years of age
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred
