Job description

Emergency Medicine Physician, North Adams, MA

North Adams Regional Hospital | Berkshire Health Systems

Practice emergency medicine in a setting that combines the autonomy and close-knit environment of a critical access hospital with strong clinical, consultative and transfer support.

Berkshire Health Systems is seeking an Emergency Medicine Physician to join the team at North Adams Regional Hospital in North Adams, Massachusetts.

Following 10 successful years as a freestanding emergency department, North Adams Regional Hospital reopened as an 18-bed critical access hospital in 2024.

Our 14-bed Emergency Department treats approximately 18,000 patients annually, offering physicians a rewarding mix of high- and low-acuity cases. Approximately 20% of patients are admitted or transferred for additional care.

Emergency Department Coverage

The department is staffed with three 12-hour physician shifts each day:

  • 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
  • 12:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m.
  • 7:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.

Physician coverage is supplemented by 12 hours of daily APP coverage, with single-provider coverage largely limited to overnight hours. Call obligations are minimal.

Clinical Resources

North Adams Regional Hospital provides access to:

  • CT and X-ray services available 24 hours a day
  • Ultrasound available Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
  • MRI available approximately eight hours per day, seven days a week
  • Hospitalist and respiratory therapy support available 24 hours a day
  • In-house anesthesia coverage Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
  • General surgery coverage for basic cases four days per week
  • SANE-trained nurses supported by Massachusetts TeleSANE services

Collaborative Specialty Support

Our physicians benefit from strong clinical partnerships designed to quickly connect patients with the appropriate level of care:

  • Acute stroke teleneurology consultation in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Real-time STEMI consultation with Baystate Medical Center
  • Tele-crisis clinicians supporting the care of psychiatric patients
  • A strong relationship with local EMS, including a priority transfer agreement for critically ill patients
  • Established transfer relationships with Berkshire Medical Center, Baystate Medical Center and Albany Medical Center

Berkshire Medical Center is approximately 45 minutes away and provides higher-level inpatient care and access to most medical and surgical subspecialties. Strong relationships with Baystate Medical Center and Albany Medical Center provide additional support for STEMI, stroke and other high-acuity patients.

Why Join Berkshire Health Systems?

  • Competitive physician compensation
  • Generous paid time off
  • Minimal call obligations
  • Supportive and collaborative clinical environment
  • Manageable annual patient volume with a varied acuity mix
  • Access to regional and tertiary-care specialists
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a close-knit community hospital
  • A desirable location in the beautiful Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, offering year-round outdoor recreation, arts, culture and an excellent quality of life

This is an outstanding opportunity for an Emergency Medicine physician who values clinical variety, professional autonomy, strong teamwork and the ability to provide essential care to a community that deeply values its hospital.
