How much do overnight babysitter jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for overnight babysitter in the United States is $12.98, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $12.74 and $13.22 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight babysitters and how can they be managed?

Overnight babysitters often encounter challenges such as managing children's bedtime routines, handling nighttime awakenings, and ensuring the safety and comfort of the children throughout the night. It's important to communicate clearly with parents about any special instructions, allergies, or bedtime routines before the shift begins. Staying calm, patient, and prepared with quiet activities or comfort items can help soothe children who wake up during the night. Building trust with both children and parents is key to a successful overnight babysitting experience.

What is an overnight babysitter?

An overnight babysitter may perform some of the same tasks as a daytime babysitter, except their primary responsibility is to stay at a house to watch and care for children overnight. As an overnight babysitter or night sitter, your duties include putting the kids to bed and overseeing their well-being throughout the night. You may need to stay the whole night or just until the parents get home. Depending on the parents’ needs, you may pick up kids from school and drive them home, help the children do their homework, make sure they eat dinner, and get them to bed. While this job may sound easier than a daytime sitter, you’re expected to stay up all night for your shift. You may need to console a sick child in the middle of the night, and, if you care for a newborn as a night nanny, sleep training may be one of your tasks.

What is the difference between Overnight Babysitter vs Night Nanny?

AspectOvernight BabysitterNight Nanny

Search & Comparison IntentLooking for overnight child careSeeking specialized overnight infant care

While both Overnight Babysitters and Night Nannies provide overnight care, Night Nannies typically have specialized training in infant care and focus on newborns, whereas Overnight Babysitters may care for children of all ages with standard babysitting certifications. The choice depends on the child's age and specific needs.

How to find overnight babysitters?

To find overnight babysitters, you can use trusted babysitting platforms or local caregiver agencies that verify backgrounds and provide reviews. Posting detailed job descriptions, including schedule and responsibilities, helps attract qualified candidates, and conducting interviews ensures compatibility and reliability.

Do overnight babysitters get paid overnight?

Overnight babysitters are typically paid for the entire shift, including overnight hours, which may be at an hourly rate or a flat fee. Payment arrangements depend on the employer or agency, and some may offer higher rates for overnight stays due to the extended hours and responsibilities involved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight babysitter?

To thrive as an Overnight Babysitter, you need experience in childcare, basic first aid knowledge, and, ideally, CPR certification. Familiarity with baby monitors, night routines, and clear communication with parents is often required. Patience, reliability, and attentiveness are vital soft skills that help build trust and ensure children's safety through the night. These skills are crucial for providing a safe, nurturing environment and responding effectively to any nighttime needs or emergencies.
