What is outside sales?

Outside sales refers to the process of selling products or services by meeting clients and prospects in person, typically outside of a traditional office environment. Outside sales representatives often travel within a designated territory to meet potential customers, deliver presentations, and close sales deals. This role requires a high level of interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and the ability to build strong relationships with clients. It differs from inside sales, which is usually conducted remotely or over the phone. Success in outside sales often hinges on face-to-face interactions and relationship building.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outside sales representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Outside Sales Representative, you need strong interpersonal skills, sales acumen, and often a background in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, mobile sales tools, and sometimes a valid driver’s license are typically required. Outstanding communication, resilience, and self-motivation set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for building client relationships, meeting sales targets, and adapting to a dynamic, field-based environment.

How does an outside sales professional typically manage their schedule and territory to maximize productivity?

Outside Sales professionals often balance autonomy with structure by planning their days around client meetings, prospecting new leads, and follow-ups within a defined geographic territory. Effective time management and route planning are crucial for minimizing travel time and maximizing face-to-face interactions. Many companies provide CRM tools and mapping software to help sales reps organize visits and track customer interactions. Collaboration with inside sales teams and sales managers is also common to share insights and align on targets. Adapting to changes—like last-minute client requests or shifting priorities—is a regular part of the role, making flexibility and strong organizational skills essential.

What is the difference between Outside Sales vs Inside Sales?

Outside Sales involves traveling to meet clients face-to-face, focusing on building personal relationships and closing deals in the field. Inside Sales primarily operates from an office, using digital communication tools to reach clients remotely. Both roles require strong sales skills and industry knowledge, but differ mainly in work environment and interaction style.

Is outside sales a good career?

Job description

Outside Sales Representative (Industrial)

$70000 - $120000 per year | Sparks, NV | On-site | Permanent

$70K-80K Base + uncapped commission (guaranteed commission for first 6mo)

A bit about us:

A well established, family owned company in the industrial equipment rental space, serving mining, industrial, construction and municipal customers across the country. Long tenured in the market, with a reputation built on solving the problems competitors walk away from.

Currently in a significant growth cycle, opening new locations and adding headcount at a pace that is not happening much elsewhere in the industry. Small enough that people still know each other by name, large enough to put real resources behind you.

Why join us?
  • Uncapped commission, plus $1,500 to $3,500 per month in guaranteed commission for the first six months while the book gets built
  • Territory ownership. This is a market-based role with only about one day a week at the branch
  • A genuine differentiator to sell. Staff engineers design the solution on complex jobs, so this is not a race to the bottom on price and availability
  • Family owned, and it shows. Work-life balance is real here and weekend email is not part of the culture
  • Full benefits including medical, dental and vision, a matching 401(k), nine paid holidays plus PTO, and tuition reimbursement
  • Vehicle reimbursement program
  • Structured onboarding with a 30/60/90 day plan and hands-on sales training alongside the Regional Sales Manager
  • A branch manager who moves quickly and gets out of the way
Job Details

This is an Outside Sales Representative role covering an established territory in Northern Nevada, selling specialized rental equipment and engineered solutions into mining, industrial, commercial and municipal accounts.

Responsibilities
  • Own and grow an assigned territory through regular face to face sales calls
  • Expand relationships and revenue across the top ten accounts while developing new business
  • Price and quote to hit territory profit objectives
  • Partner with the engineering team to build custom solutions on complex jobs
  • Participate in business development activity including trade associations, industry events and on-site product demonstrations
  • Coordinate with branch operations on equipment availability, delivery and job specifics
  • Manage pipeline and accounts in the CRM
Requirements
  • 3+ years of outside sales experience carrying a territory. This is a field sales role, and inside sales experience alone will not translate
  • Background in equipment rental, industrial services, mining, construction or heavy equipment strongly preferred
  • Technical aptitude and the ability to sell more than one product line. Training is provided on the full catalog
  • Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum six months of CRM experience
  • High energy and self directed. The branch needs someone who takes the territory and runs with it
  • Ability to travel throughout the assigned territory, roughly 1 to 25 percent
