What is an outside sales base?

An Outside Sales Base refers to a role in sales where the primary responsibility is to generate and maintain business by meeting clients in person, outside of a traditional office setting. Individuals in this position often travel to meet with prospective and existing clients, present products or services, and close deals. The 'base' part typically refers to the base salary that is offered in addition to commissions or bonuses based on sales performance. This job requires strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently. Outside sales positions are common in industries such as wholesale, manufacturing, and business-to-business sales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outside sales representative?

To thrive as an Outside Sales Representative, you need strong sales acumen, persuasive communication skills, and a track record of meeting sales targets, often supported by a bachelor's degree or relevant experience. Familiarity with CRM software, mobile sales tools, and lead generation platforms is typically required. Self-motivation, resilience, and relationship-building abilities are standout soft skills in this position. These competencies are vital for effectively prospecting clients, closing deals, and maintaining long-term customer relationships in a competitive sales environment.

What are some common challenges faced by outside sales base professionals, and how can they be managed effectively?

Outside Sales Base professionals often encounter challenges such as managing a fluctuating client pipeline, handling rejection, and adapting to varying customer needs across different territories. Success in this role requires strong self-motivation, resilience, and excellent time management skills to balance travel, meetings, and administrative tasks. Building genuine relationships with clients and collaborating closely with internal teams—such as marketing and product support—can help address customer concerns more efficiently. Staying proactive and consistently following up with leads are key strategies for overcoming these challenges.

Is outside sales a good career path?

Outside sales is a viable career that involves selling products or services directly to clients outside of an office setting, often requiring strong communication, negotiation skills, and self-motivation. It can offer high earning potential through commissions and bonuses, but also involves travel and variable income. Success depends on industry, individual skills, and market conditions.

We are seeking a driven and professional Commercial Sales Representative to develop new business within an assigned territory. You will work directly with business owners, property managers, facility leaders, hospitality operators, healthcare organizations, food-service businesses, warehouses, and other commercial decision-makers.
This is not simply a transactional sales position. It is a consultative B2B opportunity for someone who can identify customer risks, develop tailored solutions, and build lasting commercial relationships.
What You Will Do
  • Develop new commercial business within an assigned territory
  • Identify and pursue qualified prospects through field activity, referrals, networking, strategic account development, and outbound prospecting
  • Build, manage, and advance a disciplined sales pipeline
  • Conduct professional interior and exterior property inspections
  • Identify customer needs, operational risks, and service requirements
  • Develop and present customized commercial pest-management solutions
  • Prepare proposals, negotiate agreements, and close new business
  • Build long-term relationships with business owners and commercial decision-makers
  • Maintain accurate prospecting, proposal, sales, and follow-up activity within the company CRM
  • Collaborate with service and operational teams to ensure a professional transition from sale to service
  • Represent the company with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to customer value

What Success Looks Like
Successful Commercial Sales Representatives are disciplined prospectors, trusted relationship builders, and accountable territory managers.
They consistently create new opportunities, maintain an active pipeline, follow through on commitments, and communicate professionally with customers at every level of an organization.
This position is well suited for someone who enjoys working independently, competing for results, developing business relationships, and being rewarded for performance.
What We Are Looking For
  • Strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills
  • Demonstrated self-motivation, resilience, and personal accountability
  • Ability to prospect consistently and create new business opportunities
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and follow-up capabilities
  • Confidence communicating with business owners, managers, and commercial decision-makers
  • Ability to manage a territory and sales pipeline independently
  • Professional presence and a customer-focused approach
  • Ability to conduct interior and exterior commercial property inspections
  • Ability to climb ladders and access inspection areas when required
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
  • B2B sales, outside sales, territory sales, account management, or business-development experience preferred
  • Candidates from other industries will also be considered when they demonstrate professional maturity, coachability, a strong work ethic, and a documented history of achievement.

What We Offer
  • Competitive base salary plus uncapped commission
  • Earnings support during the initial training and development period
  • Average annual earnings of approximately $65,000+
  • Top performers earning $90,000 or more
  • Company vehicle
  • Company-provided iPad and cellphone
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid time off
  • Paid training and ongoing professional development
  • Performance incentives and bonus opportunities
  • Recognition programs and President's Club opportunities
  • The stability of an established company trusted for more than 88 years
