Outreach Internship information

What is an outreach internship?

An Outreach Internship is a temporary position where interns assist organizations in building and maintaining relationships with communities, stakeholders, or the public. Interns typically support outreach campaigns, communicate with target audiences, organize events, and help develop promotional materials. This role provides hands-on experience in communication, public relations, and project coordination. Outreach Internships are common in non-profits, educational institutions, and public service organizations, offering valuable skills for future careers in advocacy or community engagement.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during an outreach internship?

As an Outreach Intern, you will typically assist with developing and executing outreach campaigns, researching and identifying potential partners or community groups, and crafting communications such as emails or social media posts. You may also support event planning, manage contact databases, and help track outreach metrics. Collaboration with team members from marketing, communications, and program departments is common, and you'll gain hands-on experience in building professional relationships and expanding organizational impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outreach intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Outreach Intern, you need strong organizational abilities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a background in marketing, public relations, or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, email marketing platforms, and social media management tools is often advantageous. Initiative, adaptability, and relationship-building skills help you effectively engage with diverse audiences and support outreach campaigns. These skills and qualities are crucial for successfully raising awareness, building partnerships, and advancing organizational goals.

Internships serve as a stepping stone to full professional roles in community engagement and outreach fields.

What do outreach internships do?

Position Title:
Counselor Outreach Coordinator
Job Category:
Academic Staff
Employment Type:
Regular
Job Profile:
Counselor
Job Duties:
The Counselor, Outreach Coordinator is a generalist mental health provider serving UWL students, and the position also leads efforts to promote mental health literacy and raise awareness of the services of the UWL Counseling & Testing Center (CTC). During activities like presentations for the campus community (or supporting other members of the staff as they present), creating print or electronic materials, and meeting with other departments to understand what they want to learn, the Outreach Coordinator manages the public impression of CTC and mental health services available to students. The Outreach Coordinator ensures that CTC messaging conveys professional, compassionate, understandable, and relatable information to members of the campus community.
The Counselor, Outreach Coordinator will function as a strong generalist conducting mental health assessments (intakes), urgent care (crisis) assessments, triage assessments and professional counseling services (including individual, couples, group). Other responsibilities include: referral, consultation, in-service training, and outreach, as well as crisis intervention services and public relations services to campus and community members as appropriate. The counselor will also participate on staff, student affairs, and university committees. Similar to all staff at the CTC, the successful candidate will work to make UWL a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, and they will do so in compliance with ethical, legal, and accreditation guidelines.
The Counselor, Outreach Coordinator works full-time from August 1-May 31, and does not work in June and July.
  • Limited physical demands, as this is a typical office setting.
  • The position requires considerable computer-based work.
  • Typical office hours (7:45am-4:30pm). Evening hours may be required as we expand our services (e.g., one evening/week), with a schedule adjustment made to maintain an average of 40 hours/week onsite. While no after-hours crisis coverage is required, our clinical staff members occasionally provide evening or weekend outreach programming and may be called in for a campus crisis response during evening or weekend hours.
  • Expectations are to provide a combination of in-person and telehealth counseling services provided from the onsite office. Individuals who have become established in their role may be eligible for a limited hybrid telework schedule, if consistent with the needs of the department.

The review of applications starts on September 9, 2026. Applications received on or before September 9th are prioritized and review will continue until the position(s) is/are filled. Initial interviews will be conducted virtually, with shortlisted candidates invited to campus.
