What is outbound logistics?

Outbound logistics refers to the processes involved in storing, transporting, and distributing finished goods from a company to its customers or distribution points. This includes activities such as order fulfillment, packaging, shipping, and delivery management. Efficient outbound logistics are crucial for meeting customer expectations, reducing delivery times, and optimizing transportation costs. Companies often use specialized software and tracking systems to streamline these processes and ensure timely delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in outbound logistics, and why are they important?

To excel in Outbound Logistics, you need strong organizational skills, knowledge of supply chain processes, and often a degree in logistics, business, or a related field. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), transportation management systems (TMS), and relevant certifications like APICS or CLTD are frequently required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure timely, accurate shipments, efficient coordination among teams, and high customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced in an outbound logistics role, and how can they be effectively managed?

One common challenge in outbound logistics is ensuring timely delivery while balancing cost efficiency and inventory management. Sudden changes in demand, transportation delays, and coordination with multiple carriers can create bottlenecks. To effectively manage these issues, professionals often use logistics management software, maintain clear communication with shipping partners, and develop contingency plans for disruptions. Collaboration with warehouse, sales, and customer service teams is also crucial for smooth operations and meeting customer expectations.

Job description

What will you do?

A day in the life of a Senior Coordinator, DTC Outbound Logistics at VF looks a little like this.

The Senior Coordinator, DTC Outbound Logistics plays a critical role in optimizing VF's Direct-to-Consumer transportation network by supporting strategic initiatives, driving operational excellence, and delivering data-driven insights across the fulfillment ecosystem. This position serves as a key liaison between VF business partners, distribution centers, and transportation providers to ensure cost-efficient, reliable, and customer-focused delivery solutions.

The role requires strong analytical capabilities, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to independently manage projects and operational priorities in a fast-paced environment. The Senior Coordinator will help shape transportation strategies, support continuous improvement initiatives, and ensure consistent execution across multiple brands and distribution locations.

Let's break down that day-in-the-life a bit more.

Logistics Strategy & Project Leadership

  • Support the development and execution of outbound transportation strategies focused on service, speed, cost optimization, and customer experience.

  • Independently manage transportation-related projects and workstreams from planning through implementation.

  • Partner with internal stakeholders and external carriers to identify opportunities for network optimization and process improvements.

  • Serve as the logistics representative on cross-functional initiatives involving fulfillment, transportation, customer experience, eCommerce, store operations, and supply chain teams.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with carrier partners to drive operational performance and continuous improvement.

Analytics & Business Insights

  • Develop transportation analyses, reporting, and performance scorecards to support strategic decision-making.

  • Monitor transportation KPIs and identify trends, risks, service gaps, and cost-saving opportunities.

  • Utilize transportation and fulfillment data to recommend routing, carrier, and service-level enhancements.

  • Translate complex operational data into actionable business recommendations for leadership and cross-functional teams.

  • Maintain multi-channel outbound shipping data from America's DCs monthly, ad-hoc as needed.

DTC Transportation Operations

  • Support transportation execution across VF's fulfillment network, including eCommerce fulfillment, returns, Ship-from-Store, and retail store delivery programs.

  • Manage routing configurations, carrier service selections, and transportation system maintenance to support operational requirements.

  • Partner with distribution centers and transportation providers to ensure service commitments and customer delivery expectations are met.

  • Lead resolution of transportation disruptions and escalations while minimizing customer impact.

  • Support carrier peak season planning, capacity management, and network readiness activities.

  • Maintain transportation-related system configurations, business rules, and routing logic within supported platforms.

Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence

  • Act as a subject matter expert for transportation systems, carrier capabilities, fulfillment processes, and network optimization.

  • Identify, develop, and implement transportation process improvements that drive efficiency, service, and cost savings.

  • Establish and maintain operational controls, standard operating procedures, and compliance processes.

  • Lead ad hoc projects, analyses, and business initiatives as assigned.

  • Provide transportation expertise and support to Operations, Planning, Distribution, Customer Service, and Brand partners.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret large datasets and identify actionable insights.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage projects and influence stakeholders across multiple functions.

  • Experience supporting parcel, final-mile, and omnichannel fulfillment operations.

  • Knowledge of carrier operations, service levels, pricing structures, and transportation performance metrics.
