What is an OT Cybersecurity Specialist?

OT Cybersecurity Specialists are professionals who protect operational technology (OT) systems—such as industrial control systems, SCADA systems, and other critical infrastructure—from cyber threats. They assess vulnerabilities, implement security measures, monitor networks, and respond to incidents to ensure the safety and reliability of physical processes. Their work is crucial in industries like manufacturing, energy, utilities, and transportation, where cyber-attacks can have significant safety and operational impacts.

How does an OT Cybersecurity Specialist typically collaborate with operations and IT teams to secure industrial systems?

An OT Cybersecurity Specialist works closely with both operations and IT teams to bridge the gap between traditional IT security and industrial control systems (ICS). This involves conducting joint risk assessments, coordinating incident response plans, and aligning security protocols with operational requirements. Specialists often facilitate cross-team training and lead tabletop exercises to ensure all stakeholders understand the unique security needs of OT environments. Effective collaboration is essential to balance safety, reliability, and security in industrial settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OT Cybersecurity Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OT Cybersecurity Specialist, you need a solid understanding of industrial control systems (ICS), network security, risk assessment, and often a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with tools like SIEM platforms, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and certifications such as CISSP or GICSP are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across IT and OT teams and respond effectively to incidents. These competencies are essential to protect critical infrastructure, minimize cyber risks, and ensure the safe and reliable operation of operational technology environments.
