What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an origination manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Origination Manager, you need strong analytical skills, financial acumen, and a background in business development, often supported by a degree in finance, business, or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, financial modeling tools, and market analysis platforms is typically required. Excellent negotiation, relationship-building, and communication skills help you secure and manage deals successfully. These capabilities are crucial for identifying new business opportunities, optimizing deal flow, and driving organizational growth.

What is an origination manager?

Origination Managers are professionals responsible for identifying and initiating new business opportunities, often within sectors like finance, energy, or commodities. They build relationships with clients, assess potential deals, and guide projects from initial idea through to execution. Their key tasks include market research, deal structuring, and risk assessment to ensure profitable and strategic growth for their organization. Origination Managers play a crucial role in expanding a company's client base and revenue streams.

What are some common challenges faced by origination managers in building and maintaining client relationships?

Navigating complex deal structures and maintaining clear communication between internal teams and clients can also be demanding, especially under tight deadlines. Job Overview
As an Origination Manager, you will be the "deal shepherd" responsible for managing our commercial funnel. Our origination team is generating incredible momentum, and we need a commercially minded professional to step in, take the baton, and guide these high-value opportunities from early-stage discussions through contract execution and implementation.
Your mission is to maintain momentum, build trust with clients, and seamlessly coordinate internal technical, legal, and financial teams to get deals closed. To succeed, you should be just as comfortable on customer-facing calls as you are diving into a market model or reviewing a term sheet. If you are a continuous learner who wants deep mentorship, direct exposure to senior leadership, and the autonomy to manage complex, multi-stakeholder energy deals, this is the role for you.
Key Responsibilities
  • Deal Shepherding & Momentum: Act as the commercial driver moving newly identified generation opportunities through the development and contracting pipeline
  • Client Responsibilities & Coordination: Serve as a highly responsive, trusted point of contact for utilities (IOUs, Munis, and Co-ops), developers, and large energy buyers
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Coordinate internal stakeholders across engineering, regulatory, finance, legal, and operations to ensure technical and commercial alignment
  • Market & Technical Navigation: Navigate RTO/ISO frameworks, power market fundamentals, and transmission interconnection processes to support project delivery
  • Commercial Support: Support the structuring, negotiation, and implementation of PPAs, tolling agreements, capacity agreements, and related commercial documents
  • Storytelling & Reporting: Synthesize complex commercial, technical, and regulatory data into clean, executive-level presentations and narratives for senior leadership

Qualifications
  • 5-10+ years of total experience, with at least 3 years of transferable experience in power markets, generation development, utility commercial operations, project execution, or energy infrastructure110000
  • Fundamental Power Market Literacy: A strong grasp of organized power markets and ISO/RTO frameworks, including interconnection and transmission processes
  • Commercial & Technical Curiosity: Working knowledge of utility-scale thermal generation technologies and operational characteristics
  • Relationship & People Ability: High emotional intelligence, strong technical writing skills, and a proven track record of managing multi-stakeholder relationships
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance, Energy Policy, Engineering, or a related field that blends analytical thinking with effective communication

$110,000 - $130,000 a year
This position is remote. The salary will be adjusted to reflect local market conditions based on employee location as well as the experience of the employee. Along with the base salary, Mainspring offers pre-IPO stock options + benefits + 25% bonus.
Does your experience not meet all of our posted requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to positions unless they meet every listed requirement. At Mainspring, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, flexible, and collaborative environment, so if you want to help us transition the world to clean and affordable electricity, and don't meet all posted requirements for a particular role, we'd still love to hear from you. Mainspring can sometimes be flexible enough to shift responsibilities for the right person, or otherwise identify open or upcoming roles that may better fit your professional background.
In more traditional words, Mainspring Energy, Inc is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or protected veteran status and will not be discriminated against on the basis of disability.
This compensation and benefits information is based on Mainspring Energy's estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. We generally do not negotiate on salary once we have made an offer. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include location, relevant prior experience and/or education, or particular skills and expertise. New hires joining the company tend to be paid within the starting base pay range noted above, with opportunities to increase pay over time based on development of additional skills, competencies, and company-specific knowledge.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
