What is an Oracle GIS specialist?

An Oracle GIS specialist is a professional who works with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using Oracle technologies. They manage, analyze, and visualize spatial data stored in Oracle databases, often leveraging tools like Oracle Spatial and Graph. Their work supports projects that require mapping, geospatial analysis, and integration of location-based data into business workflows. Oracle GIS specialists may also design database schemas, optimize spatial queries, and collaborate with developers and analysts to deliver geospatial solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Oracle GIS specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Oracle GIS specialist, you need a strong background in geographic information systems, spatial databases, SQL, and typically a degree in GIS, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with Oracle Spatial, GIS software like ESRI ArcGIS, and certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you manage complex data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are critical for ensuring accurate spatial data management, optimizing database performance, and delivering actionable insights for organizational decision-making.

How does an Oracle GIS professional typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Oracle GIS professionals frequently work closely with teams such as IT, engineering, and business analytics to integrate spatial data solutions into broader company projects. They are often responsible for translating complex geographic data into actionable insights, which requires strong communication skills and the ability to understand the unique needs of each department. Regular meetings and project updates are common, as is providing technical support and training to non-GIS users. This collaborative environment not only helps ensure data accuracy and relevance but also fosters professional growth through exposure to diverse business functions.

Job description

TITLE: Database Developer with GIS Experience
LOCATION: Washington, DC/Hybrid

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in IT, related field, or equivalent experience.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: 5 years
INTERVIEWS: Either Webcam or In Person
Job Description:
The client is looking for a database developer to support a team that creates and maintains a telecommunication focused, web-based Operational Support System (OSS) application.
Employment type: Contract w2/1099/C2C
Complete Description:
The database developer will be an integral part of our Agile/Scrum team, responsible for maintaining and enhancing the database for an internal web application. This role will develop and maintain an Oracle database that supports the OSS. The database for this application currently utilizes spatial data and integrates with GIS software.
We are seeking a candidate who lives in the Washington, DC-MD-VA region. Currently this position can work remotely one (1) day per week and onsite at the customer office in downtown Washington, DC four (4) days per week.
This project primarily uses an Oracle Database. A major focus of the initial phase of this project will be to migrate the data from the current Oracle 11g Database to a more current Oracle 19c Database. This process needs to be done in a stepwise fashion to ensure that the current functionality that relies on the Oracle 11gDatabase continues to function properly while the data model and objects are seamlessly upgraded to using Oracle 19c.
The database developer will be expected to create sophisticated data models using SQL, triggers, procedural SQL that handles multistep transactions, and visualizing data models with entity relationship diagrams and other methods.
In addition to the Oracle databases(11g and 19c) the application also integrates data from other 3rdparty applications that store their data in Microsoft SQL Server databases. The project also uses ESRI’s GIS Server and Desktop product lines (e.g. ArcGIS Server, SDE, ArcGIS Pro) for Geospatial visualization of the Oracle data and to fulfill more sophisticated Mapping and Analysis requests.
We expect the candidate to be a mature team member who can take directions, provide technical guidance, and is able to communicate problems as they arise. We seek lifetime learners who know how to work on a problem, propose solutions, and ask for help.
Skills:
·         Oracle Database Developer Experience. Required 3 Years
·         Database Administration Experience. Required 2 Years
·         Experience with Spatial Queries and Geometry Objects. Required 2 Years

·         Experience with planning, coordinating, and monitoring project activities. Required 2 Years
·         Experience with leading projects, ensuring they are following established standards/procedures. Highly desired 2 Years
