PURPOSE STATEMENT


The Surgical Tech facilitates operative or other invasive procedures by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Promote the mission, vision and values of the organization. 
  • Function as a scrub person during operative and other invasive procedures by:
  1. Assembling supplies and equipment required for the procedure; 
  2. Preparing and organizing sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure; 
  3. Performing accounting procedures in concert with the RN circulator; 
  4. Assisting with placement of sterile drapes; 
  5. Providing instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure; 
  6. Maintaining an organized sterile field; 
  7. Ensuring sterility of the field and taking corrective actions as needed; and 
  8. Preparing sterile dressings
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information. 
  • Clean and prepare instruments for processing and transport them to the decontamination area. 
  • Assists with maintaining and providing a clean environment between cases and prepares the room for subsequent cases.  
  • Utilize aseptic techniques and ensure a safe environment for the patient. 
  • Follow hospital policies and procedures. 
  • Utilize time management skills to facilitate the schedule. 
  • Routinely attends departmental meetings and hospital forums. 
  • Routinely participates in department projects to continuously improve the department and/or organization. 
  • Completion of mandatory department competencies and hospital education. 
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.  
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned. 

Shift Requirement(s)

  • Call is required. 

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program.
  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
  • One year of perioperative service experience preferred. 
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS required or obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic. 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Must be able to sit and stand for an extensive amount of time. 
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard. 
  • Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines. 
  • Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing. 
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition. 
  • Exposure to blood, sharp instruments and other devices, body fluids and tissue, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions. 
  • Full range of body motion. 
  • Regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs. 
  • Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
