What is optometry sales?

Optometry sales involves selling products and services related to eye care, such as eyeglasses, contact lenses, and optical equipment. Professionals in this field may work in optometry offices, retail stores, or for companies that manufacture or distribute vision care products. Their role includes assisting customers in selecting eyewear, explaining product benefits, processing orders, and sometimes handling insurance claims. Strong communication and customer service skills are essential for success in optometry sales.

How does an optometry sales professional typically collaborate with optometrists and support staff to achieve sales targets?

Optometry Sales professionals work closely with optometrists and their support teams by understanding patient needs, recommending suitable eyewear or optical products, and providing product education. They often collaborate during patient consultations to ensure the prescribed products align with the optometrist’s recommendations. Building strong relationships with the entire clinic team is essential for creating a seamless experience for both staff and patients, which ultimately helps drive sales and customer satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in optometry sales, and why are they important?

To thrive in Optometry Sales, you need strong product knowledge of optical goods, sales expertise, and often a background in optometry, business, or a related field. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, optical dispensing software, and certifications such as ABO (American Board of Opticianry) can be beneficial. Exceptional interpersonal skills, active listening, and the ability to build rapport with clients make individuals stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for effectively matching products to customer needs, ensuring satisfaction, and driving sales growth in a competitive market.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys variety: assisting patients with premium eyewear, taking accurate measurements, adjusting and repairing glasses, and edging and finishing lenses in our in-house lab.
We are a well-established, boutique optometry practice offering high-quality eyewear, advanced technology, and personalized patient care. We are looking for a long-term team member who takes pride in accuracy, craftsmanship, patient service, and optical sales.
Primary Responsibilities

  • Recommend appropriate lens materials, designs, coatings, and upgrades
  • Take accurate optical measurements, including PD, segment height, and OC height
  • Adjust, fit, and repair eyewear
  • Explain pricing and vision-plan benefits clearly
  • Deliver completed eyewear and ensure proper vision, comfort, and fit
  • Build strong patient relationships and support the growth of the optical department
  • Assist with patient flow and general office responsibilities during busy periods
In-House Optical Lab

  • Edge, mount, and finish prescription lenses accurately and efficiently
  • Read and interpret prescriptions and laboratory work orders
  • Inspect completed eyewear for power, axis, measurements, cosmetics, and overall quality
  • Troubleshoot optical and laboratory problems
  • Handle necessary adjustments and remakes
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, supplies, and an organized workspace
  • Help manage laboratory inventory and supply orders
Qualifications
  • Previous optician experience is required
  • Optical lab, lens-edging, or finishing experience is strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of lens designs, materials, treatments, and coatings
  • Accurate and confident with optical measurements
  • Comfortable working with patients and discussing lens recommendations and pricing
  • Strong sales and customer-service abilities
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Dependable, organized, professional, and team-oriented
  • Able to move comfortably between the optical floor and laboratory
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of optical experience
  • Experience with premium eyewear and lens products
  • Experience with VSP, EyeMed, or other vision plans
  • ABO certification
  • Experience working in a private or boutique optometry practice
Schedule and Compensation
  • Full-time position
  • Competitive hourly compensation based on experience
  • Saturdays are required
  • Long-term growth opportunity within the practice
Why Join Eyes of the Marina Optometry?
  • Work with premium eyewear and modern optical technology
  • Use and expand both your dispensing and laboratory skills
  • Join an established private practice with a loyal patient base
  • Work in a professional and supportive team environment
  • Enjoy a varied role combining technical craftsmanship, patient care, and optical sales
Please submit your resume and briefly describe your experience with optical dispensing, eyewear sales, measurements, adjustments, repairs, and lens edging.
