Optical Deployment Engineer information

What does an optical deployment engineer do?

An Optical Deployment Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, and implementing optical fiber networks that transmit data over long distances. Their work involves assessing network requirements, selecting appropriate optical equipment, and overseeing the installation and testing of fiber optic infrastructure. They ensure that the optical network meets performance standards and troubleshoot issues related to signal quality or connectivity. This role is essential in supporting high-speed internet, telecommunications, and data center operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optical deployment engineer?

To thrive as an Optical Deployment Engineer, you need strong knowledge of optical networking principles, fiber optic technologies, and a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Experience with design and simulation tools (such as OptiSystem or Visio), familiarity with DWDM/CWDM systems, and relevant certifications like Cisco CCNA or FOA CFOT are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you coordinate deployments and troubleshoot complex issues. These competencies are crucial for ensuring reliable, high-performance optical networks and successful project delivery.

What are some common challenges optical deployment engineers face when working on large-scale network projects?

Optical Deployment Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders, managing tight project timelines, and troubleshooting unforeseen issues during fiber installation or equipment deployment. Working on large-scale projects may require adapting to changing site conditions and ensuring that all installations meet rigorous safety and quality standards. Effective communication and collaboration with construction teams, network planners, and vendors are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring successful project delivery.

What is the difference between Optical Deployment Engineer vs Fiber Optic Technician?

AspectOptical Deployment EngineerFiber Optic Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or related field, certifications like FOA or CiscoHigh school diploma or equivalent, certifications like FOA or OSHA
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, and overseeing deployment projects, often in office or fieldInstalling, splicing, and maintaining fiber optic cables on-site
Industry UsageTelecommunications, internet service providers, network infrastructureTelecom companies, internet providers, cable TV installation

While both roles involve fiber optics, the Optical Deployment Engineer focuses on planning and managing deployment projects, whereas the Fiber Optic Technician handles hands-on installation and maintenance. Both roles are essential in the fiber optic industry but differ in responsibilities and required qualifications.

Job description

Deployment Engineers play a critical role in building and scaling the physical infrastructure that powers AI cloud platform. Deployment team is responsible for supporting new AI data center builds, infrastructure expansions, hardware deployments, cabling validation, and site readiness activities that enable client to grow quickly and reliably.
From deploying hardware to validating cabling, troubleshooting link issues, coordinating vendor work, and supporting operational readiness, our engineers work across the full deployment lifecycle. You’ll join a collaborative, fast-moving team with opportunities to support large-scale deployments, new AI data center expansions, and next-generation infrastructure.
This role requires significant onsite deployment support and requires very high levels of domestic and international travel based on project needs.
What You’ll Be Doing
  • Deploying Client’s AI data center infrastructure across new builds, expansions, refreshes, and high-density compute deployments
  • Racking, stacking, cabling, labeling, and validating servers, PDUs, network switches, storage systems, GPU platforms, and related infrastructure
  • Installing and commissioning servers, switches, routers, storage systems, GPU hardware, and other infrastructure components
  • Independently executing defined deployment workstreams using runbooks, cabling plans, rack elevations, port maps, checklists, and validation workflows
  • Validating vendor and contractor work against Client standards for rack and stack, cabling, labeling, layout, and physical readiness
  • Running LLDP checks, link validation steps, internal tools, automation workflows, and scripts to confirm cabling and network readiness
  • Identifying and resolving common miswires, optic issues, hardware faults, communication errors, provisioning blockers, and link inconsistencies
  • Troubleshooting hardware, cabling, Linux OS, and network-adjacent issues during deployment activities
  • Coordinating with vendors and contractors to correct build quality issues and confirm completion of assigned work
  • Supporting DCTrack, NetBox, inventory, asset tracking, and deployment documentation updates
  • Submitting RMAs, tracking remote work requests, and managing shipping, receiving, and component inventory during deployment projects
  • Providing clear status updates on assigned workstreams, including progress, blockers, risks, and estimated completion
  • Partnering with Data Center Operations, Network Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, Logistics, Facilities, Security, and vendors to support deployment readiness
  • Supporting handoff of deployed infrastructure to steady-state operations
  • Participating in lessons learned and contributing to improvements in runbooks, validation workflows, and deployment procedures
  • Following safety, security, quality, and operational standards while working in active data center environments
What You’ll Add to Client
  • Overall 5+ years with 2+ years of experience deploying, operating, or supporting infrastructure in AI data center including GPU/HPC systems, cloud, lab, networking, or technical operations environments
  • Experience deploying and troubleshooting GPU servers, switches, storage systems, PDUs, optics, cabling, and related data center infrastructure
  • Working knowledge of AI data center cabling standards, rack layouts, labeling practices, power paths, and physical deployment best practices
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, cabling, Linux OS, and network connectivity issues
  • Linux command-line experience, including working with terminal sessions, logs, and standard diagnostic commands
  • Familiarity with scripting, automation workflows, or tooling used to validate hardware, cabling, and connectivity
  • Ability to independently execute standard deployment workstreams with minimal supervision
  • Ability to identify physical infrastructure issues such as miswires, incorrect labeling, improper cable routing, rack elevation mismatches, optic issues, or hardware placement errors
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate status, blockers, risks, and escalation needs
  • Ability to work professionally with contractors, vendors, and cross-functional teams during high-cadence deployment projects
  • Strong problem-solving ability and willingness to perform technical deep dives to resolve deployment blockers
  • Ability to operate effectively in fast-moving environments with shifting priorities, tight timelines, and limited local supervision
  • Experience with inventory management, asset tracking, remote work requests, and RMA processes
  • The ability to travel domestically and internationally based on deployment needs
  • Support deployment schedules that include extended onsite periods, non-standard hours, or project-based rotations
  • Valid driver’s license and comfort with driving as needed
  • Ability to remain on your feet throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs
